Sometimes I really hate precepting.
We have four new people starting in phlebotomy and two of 'em are training for third shift duties tonight. The first two I had were awesome, excited to get the job done, wanting to know everything we could teach them. But these two? Ugh.
They obviously know eachother outside of the lab, which is fine, but your socialization comes AFTER your job. I've been sitting in the room waiting for the one I'm precepting to come back from hanging out with the other one to tell him he's going to have fun explaining to an ICU nurse why he's at least half an hour late to do a draw, and that he missed a trauma. I helped him out for the first part of the night when it was a little busier, but if he's going to go off and play before doing his job, I'm going to let the nurses unleash their rage on him.
And then I'm going to unleash my rage on him. I don't know if he's intimidated because I'm younger than him, if he's really just too into this other gal and not so much into his job, or if he feels I'm condescending because he has previous poking experience, but knows diddly about these tubes, their amounts, and the duties of third shift and this hospital in general.
He actually asked me to draw someone because there were too many people in the room watching him. Uhh, what's going to happen when you're in a trauma and there're twelve people working on one patient and you've got to squeeze in there to get that blood? Or worse, a code blue when there's even more people and it's even more dire?
Hell, what's going to happen in a few hours when I teach you arterial blood draws and I'm hovering over you to ensure you don't hurt or kill the patient?
Rargh, I want the other two back.
sounds like a bloodbath waitin to happen...
people who arent mature enough to do their job dont last long where i work. hopefully this guy wont last long so you can get your sanity back. good luck. dont hurt anyone. ![]()
A lot of men can't stand to take instruction from a woman. That might be part of it. They really resent it when everyone respects the woman but not them. It hurts their little wee wees egos.
do you get paid extra for precepting? do you get to evaluate the trainees?
when i was in hospital there was a fresh group of student nurses almost every shift (it's a teaching hospital). most were great, but some were bloody awful: running around, yelling, laughing and talking loudly in the corridors. one group in particular sounded a third-grade field trip (at night, on the surgical ward no less).
the fact that they were either wonderful or horrible as a group suggests that the teachers set the tone. crack down! make them realize that this is serious ****. scare the crap out of 'em
.
hey CD - have you noticed that you don't get nearly as many responses when you don't post about boozing and your sex life? growing up sucks, doesn't it?

i was working on a pipeline job where they were trenching over a prolific aquifer. pipelines have a 50' right-of-way and so there was just enough room to walk on either side of the trench in the center and allow room for dozers etc to run up and down each side. my job was to follow the trencher and document any potential features that might be hydrologically-connected to our prolific springs here in austin.
anyways, this latino guy kept getting closer and closer to me whenever he would go by me on his dozer - like he was trying to make me fall in. i pointed at him threateningly and made it obvious to him i knew exactly what game he was playing but i think he just took it as a challenge.
i finally told the gen contractor and i never saw that guy again. freakn male egos!!
i "donated" (sold) my plasma for 3 years straight and i hated when i would get the people that couldnt do it. either the people that were so scared or the people that were overly confident. i have giant veins...it cant be THAT hard.
yet i would leave with bruised arms. YET i would keep coming back. so i guess thats my fault. haha.
train them well...
I'm also not responding back quickly enough to keep my topics going. Usually after I start one, I wander off to do something else (last night it was going to the surgical ICU to pass out candy and nag the nurses for a favor in regards to the trainee) and forget to come back until I've got spare time again.
Booze and sex play a big role, but hell, I can't have either one right now. I demand the same attention for my constant bitching about various aspects of work!
I got so frustrated with that kid, I shipped him to the heart centre with the other new girl, who he kept running off to play with anyway instead of doing actual work. It's obvious who he has trained under. He acts just like 'em. I told him that, too and he said he'd rather work with those guys than me and will rarely pick up a third shift.
Newsflash, dude. December's just around the corner. After my maternity leave, I'll be working all shifts again. That is if you make it off probation.

Ha! I hope you told him the last part too. Give him hell, cd!
