Sooo Im going to be honest...I like thinspiration

Quote  |  Reply

Im not anorexic...obviously. But I do like to see thinspiration to keep off a binge. Almost 90% of the time if I spend my binge moment looking at skinny biatches then Im like not hungry anymore, I realize that I do need to be strong and not stuff my face for no reason. Also they stress visualization and that was one of my main problems. I could never see myself skinny...but as the weight is dropping Im starting to remember what its like to be that way. If I truly visualize being skinny then my desire to eat goes down as well, cause im like would I, if I were thin, be eating this stuff. No...so how can I get skinny/stay skinny if I give into every urge. I'm trying to be honest cause I see so much negative stuff about thinspiration...but its really helping me and I dont have any anorexic ideas.

i believe sometimes the "fear" of it is too big.

yes it can be dangerous to people who are prone to EDs, but for people who just want motivation to become a healthy weight... why not?

I think thinspiration was already discussed here. =) There are some good points in this thread that are worth reading.

thanks for the link!

the girls in thinspiration photos [typically] are either anorexic or look anorexic. you won't find anyone of a "healthy weight" in serious thinspiration. that's the problem. are they your motivation because you want to look like them? that's tremendously worrying.

y'all talk about it like it's a religion.

Lol @ pgeorgian, didn't you hear? it is a religion now.
Their worshipers have their own creed... it's rather disturbing though.
Don't ask how i know.

Revolution3 - I guess it depends on what she means by "Thinspiration".
Thinspiration is simply a photo of a thin person who inspires you to be thin also.
For instance, you could look at a picture of Sarah Ulmer (NZ cyclist) as thinspiration because she is a slender-in-shape-woman.
Or you could be looking at pictures of bikini models because they generally have a lot more curves then runway models.
... *sigh* i watch a lot of fashion TV, i admit.
Bikini models are very curvy because it's what makes the bikinis look sexy in the first place.
"Ah... so.... if i put on the bikini my bum will look like that? well ok then! *jumps on band wagon*."
Sorry i know i'm getting sidetracked, just had to share the funny little scene in my head.

... Anyway, it really depends what she's using as inspiration.

Holy crap! I use this term all the time and never knew the pro-ana connotation. Grreeaat...

I'm still going to use it.

no, i have actually seen thinspiration with athletes and such. and i do not adore anorexic types, just thin and elegant.

i do not want a body exactly like them - after all, i am realistic, and in my thirties, so that i know i am not able to have a body like a 18 years old even when i lose excess weight.

i just cannot see what is wrong when an overweight person looks at a photo of a non-overweight person and says "what a nice picture. i better not have that bag of potato chips and choose broccoli instead".

again: i never undereat, do not have an eating disorder and i need motivation because i am still very overweight. nice pictures of thin women are such a motivation for me, and i do not think they are some sort of dangerous drug that gets me addicted.

yeah lol, I agree it helps me visualize a lean body. I have no desire to look like skin and bones. I like my curves. Im actually happy with my body now I want to be more lean though. Without motivation...where ever that comes from. Ill slack off

Is there such thing as "curvy" thinspiration? I don't mean curvy as a PC euphemism for fat. I mainly mean I want my hourglass figure back, but I don't see very many modern images that fit that.

Is that a serious site, or a joke? I can't believe that anyone would actually ENCOURAGE eating disorders.

talking about thinspiration is not necessarily bad, especially when it involves the "healthy" thinspiration types etc..but monarch777, did you SERIOUSLY just link to a pro-ana site? Jeez!!!! You've got to be kidding. bad taste. there are people at risk on these forums.

seems a post was deleted?

Sorry about the link in my post. I did not realize that it triggered or endangered others. But I still stand by my original post eluding to the fact that the "thinspiration" thing was crap. And probably is just as bad as a trigger as the link was.

Google "thinspiration". That's where I found the offending site. 'nuff said I suppose.

Again, apologies to the people who struggle with anorexia.

I am re-posting my original post...minus the evil link.

I think the "thinspiration" thing is just a pro-ana thing. They don't show girls or women who are at all in the healthy range. Looking like a concentration camp survivor is no more attractive than looking like you ATE an entire concentration camp. The spectrum of healthy weight is just that. Healthy. If your body fat is that low, what does a person expect to happen to their immune system once they get sick? Do you think their body is going to be able to use any fat stores at all while the person is unable or unwilling to eat? It seems to me that you would just end up in the hospital more quickly. A person needs a bit of fat. Not tons, a bit. These chicks have no muscle tone. Their muscle is being used as protein to feed thier brains. So what kind of quality of life is that? Sitting in a chair, can't eat...and could never in a million years have enough energy to run a race or mountain bike? What a fun life. But hey...you will look great in clothes. A virtual hanger !

Why don't you look at pictures of uber-healthy models and female athletes? Eat healthy, nutritionally dense foods and work out? Why look at those scarecrows?  I wouldn't look at them for "thinspiration"...no more than I would look at a morbidly obese person for any kind of positive influence. On both ends of the spectrum..its an unhealthy, oft times ugly thing.

In most everything in life there is balance and common sense.

 Healthy thinspiration? Okay...whatever you say.

If you're looking at an athlete, it's not so much thinspiration as it is just inspiration, right?

because an athlete's goal, while often tied directly or indirectly to their weight, is more about being at their own personal best physically and performing with maximum effectiveness and concentration in their chosen sport

I think you are probably right in that it is not the same.

I, for one, have no interest in having a body fat % so low that I have itty bitty breasts, like most serious athletes.  Mine are small enough, as is!

I guess I'm not on the thinspo or inspo boat.

Here is the difference....between being healthy and just being skinny....

the above site shows healthy people....the very term "thinspiration" in a search engine is synonymous with pro-ana sites. Therefore, the mere term could be a "trigger" and the person who originally posted is promoting this mindset.

Sites that showcase emaciated bodies and promote body dysmorphic tendencies are not healthy....so even if you are being honest in saying that YOU like thinspiration...isn't probably something you should be posting here either.  I never knew what the term meant until I search engined it...and I am a 42 year old woman who probably will not be easily influenced by that garbage. A fifteen year old girl might just get the wrong idea.

I have my own ways of "thinspiration" without the websites.  I have my screen saver set to a picture folder in My Documents that is full of pictures of HEALTHY celebrities.  Mainly, Gwen Stefani.  She is very lean but not *skinny* like say, Angelina Jolie (her arms are seriously disguisting).  Gwen has an amazing stomach, and even though I'm not aiming to have abs like that, it still inspires me to work out and eat healthy. There are also pics of myself in there when I was at my goal weight in May 2007.

I'm also thinking about taping a pair of shorts to my refridgerator LOL.  My husband made a trip to the states recently for work (he is USAF and we're in Germany).  The shopping here is WAY too expensive because of the Euro rate, so he picked up a few things for me.  1 item was a pair of shorts from Hollister that are adorable and I would LOVE to wear.  They fit my waist just fine, but my legs looked awful!  It was a big eye opening moment for me.  He barely ever buys me things and this was a really sweet surprise, so it means alot to me to be able to wear them confidently some day!  Seeing those shorts every time I go to grab a snack would remind me to think twice about my food choices!

Anyway, I know some of you pointed this out already, but make your own thinspiration!  Who else has someone/something specific that helps to *thinspire* you (like restless_girl and Sarah Ulmer) ?
