Does this happen to anyone else? I get so ridiculously hungry when I am about to get my period, that it completely ruins the entire rest of the month that I've worked out and watched my calories. Before I got my period last month, I was at 165. When my cycle was over, I was back up to 180. It really devastates me, too. I am not sure if this is normal or if I may have something askew with my hormones or what. I don't even eat that badly, I'm just literally insatiable, and I don't know how I can fill myself up.
Any one with the same problem? Any one with any tips??
well I know you wrote this in September.. The reason for this problem is normal. Some people get it and some don't. Your body automaticly burns more calories when your on your period. The reason you are more hungrey.. is because your body is working extra hard around this time and needs the extra nutrients. So when it comes to your TOM. You really shouldn't be to strict on yourself during this time. Well I hope I have help.
The saaaame thing happens to me! It's frustrating to no end, because like you said, it pretty much undoes all my hard work. But not only do I crave more food, I crave BAD food. It's horrible.
I think maybe the best way to beat the cravings are to not ignore them, but 1) choose healthy alternatives to the food you really want when you're on your period and/or 2) allow yourself a tiny bit of sweets or something you're craving so you don't totally binge on it eventually. I heard that these cravings also have to do with low levels of iron, folic acid, and calcium in the body. Leafy greens have all those things, but you could also try supplements to kill the cravings. You need to kinda know your cycle for that though and take the supplements BEFORE you actually get your period although I think it's okay (just not as effective) to take them during.
So far I've only succeeded in not creating as much damage during these craving spells, but I haven't gotten rid of them. I just try to drink more water, keep up with exercise (although one def doesn't want to exercise at that time of the month, I know) a bit, and stuff myself with greens rather than carbs and fats... which are what I crave. Green tea also helps curb appetite.
Anyway, hope that helps. Good luck!
Try to think about what you're lacking, that's making you crave bad foods. I spoke to a dietitian a while back, and now take iron supplements the week before my period, and make sure my protein and calcium intakes are a little higher. This usually means having a little more soy milk or yogurt than i usually would, but i don't find that i am crazy hungry as much during my period.
I also make room in my calories for a dark chocolate mars bar or box of glossettes dark chocolate raisins (about 300 cals) on the first day of my cycle, which is a day i usually feel terrible and want some comfort food. they're both high in iron, so i don't feel bad about it. Make room for it though, by bribing yourself to go for a run or by cutting something out from your diet. It's not healthy to cut something nutritious everyday for a chocolate bar, but probably once a month it can't hurt. i think that knowing you're going to have a big treat at the end of the day can help control your cravings.
