Does this sound like a balanced healthy meal?
Does this sound like a healthy balanced meal?
- black beans sauteed with onions and tiny bit of light margarine
- summer squash also sauteed with a bit of light margarine
- a yam (i would eat an american sweet potato but we dont have those in brazil) with a yogurt sauce (i make it it myself with low fat yogurt + spices)
My worry is that it isnt balanced. But my reasoning would be the beans as a source of protein, yam as a source of healthy carbs.
what do you think?
A balanced meal means one with carbohydrates, protein and fats.... and I would also add 'lots of vegetables'. So the beans are protein/carbohydrates, the yam is carbohydrate, the squash is a vegetable. What's missing, I'd say, are fats... Swap the light margarine for some butter or a good slug of olive oil and you'd probably find it tasted rather better.
I agree with gi-jane. I would definately eat this as a meal (with the olive oil). I eat every 3 hours so if you only eat 3 times a day, I would make sure to eat a substantial amount.
I'd also add some kind of dark green food - broccoli or a leafy green salad. The veggies you've listed are really starchy and are on the higher-cal end of things.
Beans are an "incomplete protein", meaning that they do not include all the essential amino acids required by your body. Combine them with rice or grate some cheese on top to get all the amino acids you need. Of course, you don't need every meal to be complete, so if you are getting the other required amino acids in some other meal, you can just stick with beans if you want.
