Are soy beans a good cholesterol lowering food?
Asked by anonymous on Oct 07, 2009 in Nutrition

Are soy beans, or edamame beans as they are sometimes called, a good food to eat to lower cholesterol levels?

Answer

Soy and soy-based foods and supplements do not significantly lower cholesterol levels.  That was the conclusion of the American Heart Association after they reviewed a decade-worth of studies on the health benefits of soy.  Their findings were published in the journal Circulation in early 2006.  Still, soy foods certainly won’t raise cholesterol levels because soy is very low in saturated fat.  Soy is a good source of vitamins and minerals and of good-quality protein as well.
