Soy milk

Quote  |  Reply
I love the taste, and I lately i've been using it instead of normal milk with my cereal(mostly with weetabix). The weird thing is, if I eat this as a breakfast-2 weetabix biscuits and a cup of soy milk-, I dont feel hungry even at 2 o'clock. Sure, soy is filling, but can it be this filling? Or does this mean that my body is not digesting it ok? It worries me a bit cause I always get hungry at about 11...Should I go on with it?

it may be the 20-30% fat content of the soy milk that keeps you feeling full...that is, unless you're also using 2% milk, in which case i don't know the answer!

i don't see a problem with not feeling hungry at your usual time.  you may want to eat a small snack at your usual 11am hour for the sake of keeping your metabolism up, but other than that, there shouldn't be a problem.

if your body wasn't happy digesting it, it would surely let you know (discomfort/gas), but i think you're fine!  keep on with the soy milk...it sure is delicious!

i am in the same boat.. i recently switched to the 8th continent light original soymilk and i loove it :) its lower in carbs, sugar, calories and it tastes better. but i also find myself fuller after having it with cereal or by itself which is at least one glass every day
I too have found a new love in soy milk. I used to drink 1% milk, but I have found that soy milk is not only nutriciously better for you, but in my opinion it tastes better too. Yum yum yum!!! I also, like all of you, it keeps me fuller longer. You can never go wrong with that!!!

I drink a glass of chocolate 'Silk' Soy milk for breakfast and it usually takes me several hours past lunch time, it definately has a good appetite satisfaction effect and hey, its extra protein so you cant go wrong.

soy is not necessarily a healthy food. It's quite the marketing strategy on the part of the soy industry that it is now considered the wonder food.

Some 'soy is bad' links for you to consider:

The most balanced article I've read on the subject is from Patrick Holford, a well respected British nutritionist. He points out that not all soy is created equal. Fermented products like tofu, tempeh and soymilk made from organic, non-genetically-modified whole soybeans (not from soybean isolates, read your labels) are a far cry from the highly processed soy products like textured vegetable protein used to make soy burgers.

Personally I've taken the moderation route. I've reduced my milk intake - of all sorts - considerably and switch off between soy milk and skim cow juice.

If nothing else, soy is a very common food allergen and you should give your body a break from it now and then.

Soy is a very versatile, healthy alternative to meat that has been used for centuries in asian cultures without adverse effects. Overly processed soy is just as bad as overly processed food of any kind. Keep it simple-tofu, soymilk, soybeans, and you will be fine. I've been eating soy my entire life and had no problems because of it.  The vegetarian meat alternatives that use soy protein and add flavorings, colorings, chemicals, preservatives, etc(like Morningstar farms) are like eating a hotdog version of soy. Common sense should tell you that they aren't for every day consumption.

Tofu, on the otherhand, is not going to hurt you.
