soy whey protein

Quote  |  Reply

A friend of mine who lost a ton of weight drinked soy whey protein shakes because she said they burned fat. Is there any truth to this? (She also worked out and counted calories, so it wasn't the shake alone.)

From my experience, it's not the soy that burns fat, it's the exercise. In a roundabout way, I suppose it can. The extra protein helps maintain/build muscle (with the exercise), extra muscle helps increase your metabolism, increased metabolism helps burn fat more easily.

I like to drink them in the morning because I don't have much of an appetite early in the day. It helps me get in calories and protein and energy. They can't hurt (as long as you avoid the mixes that have a crapload of sugar!)

No, I don't agree that they burn fat. The main purpose of a soy or whey protein drink is for immediately after a workout, especially weight training. It nourishes your muscles. Liquid protein is good then but to just drink them for weight loss is going to be counter productive. There are quite a few calories in those drinks and they add up quickly. I prefer to get my protein from food. So lean meats, chicken, tuna or cottage cheese, peanut butter or eggs is also good after a workout. You also want carbs after a workout. I like cereal or wheat bread with peanut butter or eggs.

It is important to eat fairly soon after a workout to prevent muscle damage.

Whey is the perferred protein source in sports and bodybuilding nutrition because it contains superior quality. Made up of Amino Acids Leucine, lsoleucine and Valine- which are important for the maintance of muscle tissue.

After 20 mins of drinking this, I do go into the gym and weight train. This is to help the muscle tissue, and as you see.. She did workout. It has nothing to do with her weight loss, it's only feeding your muscle tissue. I used them as a replacement shake for working out only. Just because I heard it's good to feed your body some type of protein before doing any type of workout program, and I've been drinking this stuff for a long time, and have lost over 76 pounds, and I don't think it's the drink "Shake" alone. It's the other things she has been doing.

She's been counting calories, and working out- and that is why she has lost a great deal of weight. These shakes are helping her feed her muscle tissue. With the right workout program, you can use muscle tissue to burn fat, just because muscle does burn more fat.

Their is some ingredients that may support some fat lost, but not a large %. I've heard that Creatine Monohydrate, which is one of the ingredients helps with a little fat loss.

Please Correct me if I'm wrong about this.

The shakes have protein and a lot of good healthy stuff in them in a relatively small amount of calories. Mine are a total of 200 cals with milk.  I use them to replace a meal every other day or so.  Or for a healthy snack.  It has helped my keep my calorie count under control while still getting good nutrition.
