Being a vegan, soya has become an important part of my diet to replace dairy. It seems to be in everything I like the most; tofu, soy yogurts, soy chocolate, dairy free mayo, soy cream and soya milk.
Yet most of us have become vegan because we care so much about animals and the environment, so I wouldn't be suprised if you have started to worry about where the soya beans have been sourced from.
Soya farming has now become huge, and is controlled mostly by big companies, which means its putting small bussinesses out of work. Huge parts of the amazon rainforest are being cut down to allow more planting of soya.
Having got very worried about this, I then desided to find out where Alpro sources there beans from, as this is the company that produce most of the products I use.
This is what i found out:
'Only a small proportion of our soya beans are sourced from Brazil and never from deforested rainforest. The farms growing our soya beans are located in the far south of Brazil. Our farmers take great care of their land using crop rotation to avoid soil depletion and crop diseases.
We also source soya beans from Canada, China and Southern Europe'
This put my mind slightly more at rest. Also there website states that they do NOT use GM crops, though I am undesided to wether GM is a bad thing or not.
As well as this I watched 'pig business' on 4oD (channel 4 on demand) a few days ago, and found out that most of the soya crops that where being planted in areas of the amazon rain forrest were being used to produce animal feed.
What do you guys think about this subject?
