I took a spin class yesterday for the first time in a while - I love the work out and it's fun and a good way to get me up in the morning - but I feel like I can't do it, not because it's too intense, but because the seat hurts my butt too much!

Help! Any spinners in here who know what I'm talking about/have a solution?

I have recently started to spin and after the first time I thought I would never look at a bike seat the same again! I have kept up with it though, because it is a great workout, and I am up to two spin classes a week. Sticke with it. It does get easier, or should I say, your butt gets tougher! ;)

That's what I want to hear that it gets a little easier on my poor tush :-P

I thought the same thing for my spinning class.  I ended up buying a special bike short that has cushioning in the butt.  Works GREAT!!!  I got mine at Sports Authority - look in the biking section.

:-)

Was it expensive? I just signed up for a monday/wednesday/friday 9 am spin class and I'm starting to think after a couple weeks I'll be in serious pain!

The more you do it the less it will hurt, even your bum needs to get in shape.  Bike shorts can help too, they can be expensive but they don't have to be, $20 or $30 will get you a starter pair.

I bought a pair of cheap bike shorts that were meant to be liners (so I'd have to wear them inside another pair). They worked great for only $25. After a few classes, I didn't even need them anymore... you just get used to it.

Also make sure you aren't on the edge of your seat the whole time.

Mine was pretty inexpensive - retailed for $35 but was on sale for $28.  :-)

Have fun!

It will totally go away in a few days -I just started spinnig two weeks ago-and pushed through it at first.

Don't be afraid to stand up if it gets uncomfortable the first few times!

It is this exact reason that I do not do spin classes.

I joke to my spin-addicted friend that my workouts do not need to include activities that make me feel like I've broken my vajaja.

People keep telling me it gets easier the more you do it - but I just don't enjoy it enough to get through that painful part of it.

my butt has lots ofcushion, but I suggest you get a seat cushion.

pardon my ignorance, but what do you mean by a "spin class"?

thanks, Neil

It's a high intensity cycling class

O.K i will stick to my "normal" cycling and digging the allotment thanks!!!

I just started a spin class as well, but it is Pedal & Pump, which means about 60% of the time spinning and 40% free weights.  I love it, but my butt and whole general 'area' are feeling the pain.

If you are getting pain in that area then your seat is not adjusted properly.  You should never feel pressure there from a bicycle seat.  Your weight should be supported by the Sit Bones at the base of your pelvis.

wait...do you have a butt?....let's start there...that might be ur problem.....

Hi I'm new to this site.

I started spinning about 3 weeks ago 4 x's a week and it does get easier on your butt, but my legs still get tired doing climbs or jumps.

I'm confused with this workout because some people tell  me that I will not lose weight or inches doing spin, that I will bulk up my legs.  Can anyone tell me the truth.

Thanks

Hey, my local walmart sells a padded "seat cover"  it is very padded and made to fit right over the spin bike seat.  I've used it in addition to my padded shorts and it works wonders.

It is indeed the sit bones that hurt the times I've tried it (yes more than once!). I just joke that when I'm walking like a cowboy the next day... it appears that I have  injured more important regions as well.

I'd like to think I have a fabulous butt - however it must not have enough 'concentration' over those sit bones. dammit.

donnadnr: Spin will build leg muscles - especially if you haven't exercised prior to this. Spin is mostly considered a cardio workout (not strength training) so it isn't going to turn you into the hulk. However its unlikely you will become 'bulky' especially if you are trying to lose weight. If you are female it is very difficult (not impossible) to become 'bulky' with muscles. You don't have enough testosterone. Spin is an excellent workout and will burn calories. Burning calories through exercise when combined with nutritious healthy eating can result in weight and/or inches lost.

Thanks for the info.  I have been going to the gym for awhile.  I do toning with weights 3x's a week.  I was doing kickboxing but switch to spin.

I feel so much better doing the spin and my health has never been better.  At 54 yrs old, I feel and look good (except for the extra pounds to lose).
