Sprained ankle

Quote  |  Reply

Hello all,

I chipped a bone in my ankle a few weeks ago while in Europe and just found out about a week or so ago. Before that I was walking on it simply wrapped up in an ace bandage. Anways, I put on a few pounds while on my vacation and would love to take them back off. However, I'm not able to run or do the elliptical, both of which I usually do to get my cardio in. The doctor said I can use the stationary bike, but I'm looking for some other alternatives to burning some calories. Does anyone know of some good exercises that won't put too much strain on my ankle? Thanks for the help!

I sprained my ankle a few years ago, and it took forever to heal (at least it seemed that way to me).  What I did (finally) after a few months was see a physical therapist, who gave me a series of exercises for the ankle itself.  A PT would also be a good source of information regarding your cardio while recuperating.  Good luck!

GIve it time to heal otherwise you will be off of exercise for even longer.  The stationary bike is your best bet for cardio. You can continue doing upper body with weights...I would limit [or actually not do any] lower body/weighted exercise. You could damage your already injured foot more and also, you will be overcompensating with your 'good' foot and therefore, could possibly end up with two hurt feet/ankles.

Patience wins in this one! :)

I am so in the same boat with you. I have put two posts because I couldn't even walk on mine.  I am starting to. I got a brace which seemed to help. I don't know what the weather is like where you are at but I live in a very warm climate (Texas) so swimming does wonders for me. So if you can get some swimming in.  My dad recommends running in the water.  I have 2 small kids, which also love to go.

I miss my walking. If I want a good work out, I can just either do laps, play with them or tread water to keep weight off.  I miss my morning walks and can't wait until I can do it again. Feel better soon! Also you might want to find that ankle brace. I don't know if a drug store would carry those. I had the ace bandage as well which it did okay but I was still worried about my ankle rolling and causing more injury.

Feel better soon!

Maybe some floor exercises?  Things like the good ol' bicycling on your back, sit-ups, leg lifts...

Hope your ankle gets better quickly!

how about swimming???
