Squash chips or fries
Hi everyone! I have a question for any of you who've made summer/butternut squash chips or fries. I can't seem to make them correctly :( . I follow the recipe of oven 200 deg.,slice in thin slices (for chips) then bake for 60 minutes, turn pan and bake until crisp. But when I take them out of the oven in that time they're all shriveled and mooshy! lol! Can anyone explain to me how to make them? I'm not usually a lost cause for cooking, and I really want to try this recipe out. Its low calorie and yummy!
Thanks in advance!
Do you spray the fries/chips (lightly) with an olive/canola spray before tossing them in the oven?
Yeah, I use pam cooking spray. Both on the pan and on the fries before i sprinkle them with salt and oregano.
You do need a teensy bit of fat to get them to crisp at all. I measure a tablespoon of good olive oil into a large bowl, then toss, with my clean hands, all the chips until they are coated with a thin sheen of oil. Then I bake them as you did. You want the edges to get a little brown.
Ah Ha! THANK YOU Claire! I will try that! It must be the problem.
I made these once and had the same problem. I posted a thread about it too and they told me to put salt on them and let them sit over night to dry them out. Then when you bake them it won't be mushy. Or you can pat them dry before baking them. I havent' made them since then, but I thought it sounded like it would work.
I make awesome Butternut Squash fries. I cut the butternut squash into fry-like strips and then I wrap them in a papertowel to blot them to take out some of the moisture. And then I lay them on a cookie sheet and spray them with Pam Spray and sprinkle them with salt and Old Bay seasoning. I then bake them for 40 minutes at 425 degrees and they come out perfect :)
Ty sugarbabie! I need to go get another squash from the store and I'll try my fries your way. I like that it doesn't need any olive oil or anything because I really didn't want to have any added fat with them. I like the pam cooking spray!
olive oil is good for you though, so it wouldn't hurt to have a little, especially if measured.
is it chips or crisps??!! either way- the more like the original crunch, the more likely you wont eat the higher calorie ones!
wish i had a butternut squash to hand now!!!
lol monkfish, ty! Yes, what I mean is: "chips" american= "crisps" english, or "fries" american "chips" english. I hope I got that right! :P Anyway, I can't make either one of them. But thanks to all the help from you guys I'm gonna see if I can get another squash today and make some tonight.
you did indeed get that right!!!
after seeing your post i made some crisps (chips) - the first batch were burnt to smytherines, but the second batch was awesome!!! ![]()
