Squashes, sweet potatoes, etc.

Which one do you like the most between butternut squash, acorn squash, sweet potatoes, yams??

Are they all pretty similar in calories/nutrition/fiber, etc? Which one has the best nutritional value for its calories...

And what's your favorite ;)

Do you consider this your "carbs" for the meal when you eat it usually?

Tell me anything.... :) and your best simplest recipes. I just bake butternut squash and eat it whole sometimes!

They are all good.  Here in the states I don't believe that we get a true yam unless you are at a specialty store... do a google search... true yams are as big as your forearm.  What we call "yams" here is a darker fleshed sweet potatoe.

Supposedly butternut squash is better for you than acorn less calories more nutrients... and both are better than sweet potatoes...

Not to direct you away from this site.. I love calorie count... but www.nutritiondata.com does a nice job of visually rating foods based on their nutrition and fullness factors...

Out of all of them I perfer Butternut Squash because they are sweet but not AS sweet as sweet potatoes. So I make Butternut Squash fries with pepper and old bay and then dip in ketchup like french fries and I also make butternut squash pancakes with shredded butternut squash and spices.

I do have an acorn squash at my house right now but I'm not sure what to do with it yet, last time I baked one with syrup and cinnamon I wasn't a big fan of it. Maybe I'll stuff it with ground turkey and brown rice this time.

Anyway the best thing to do is experiment.

Sweet potatoes hit the spot in more ways than one... I love them with my lunches. I'll usually use them if I do not have ready-made quinoa, barley, or bulgar wheat for my carbs.

And I usually boil them with cinnamon, ginger root, or curry depending on my tastes for the meal. I also eat the yellow squash raw... low that stuff. :)

Thanks for your replies! :)

Sweet potatoes are a powerhouse of healthy nutrients. They provide fiber, protein, potassium, calcium, iron, manganese, Vitamins: B6, C, E, and about 769% of the Vitamin A we need daily.  A 7 oz. sweet potato has about 180 calories. And NO fat, saturated fat or cholesterol.  I cut them up into chunks or sometimes in steak-fries style, add 1/2 Tablespoon canola oil and then toss with cumin, chili powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, black pepper, and a smidgen of salt. Then I bake for about 20 minutes or so in a 400 degree oven.  Or if you prefer sweet you can add reduced-fat margarine, cinnamon, nutmeg,  Splenda sweetner (regular or brown sugar) for something more like dessert. Enjoy!

Try baking a buttercup squash sometime.  Drier and sweeter than butternut or acorn squash.
