I bought one of those stainless steel water bottles. It was pretty expensive, $10-20 for a water bottle? But I drink a lot of water and stopped buying bottled water along time ago... So I figured it was still saving me money. I have washed it several times and it still tastes gross. It reminds me of the way water would taste out of a greyhound bus bathroom... it is just gross! Does anyone here like these water bottles? Did I just get a bad one?

This is going to sound odd.... but try soaking it in Mr Clean (or bleach) that is very diluted. Then give it a really good rinse (or 5, if you are picky like me) and put it in the dishwasher or wash it by hand a couple times with as hot of water as you can stand.

I heard that from a friend and tried it, it actually worked.

Oh, and NEVER use anything but water in it. I used it once as a waterbottle for my smoothie since I had forgotten my plastic one at work one day... I can't use it again. Even after washing it several times. It has a funky smell and taste. Ick.

ya think??? I wanted to try the dishwasher but it says DO NOT USE IN DISHWASHER... And it says do not use bleach. But... I guess it is worth a try because I will NEVER use this thing if the water is going to taste like toilet water!

The only reason I could see it saying not to use it in the dishwasher is because of the plastic. Mine, I was able to take off the plastic bits so it was only the stainless steel part. (And even then, on the top shelf, it should be fine)

Maybe you got a bum one? I have a SIGG and its awesome.

Maybe... Cause I tried the dishwasher and the water still smells and tastes bad. I really wanted convenient water, like bottled water, so maybe I will try another brand. Definitely going to save the receipt on this one!

I have a stainless steel Starbucks reusable water bottle and it actually does not get "dirty" too easily.. Buuut, I found that if you take dish soap (or bleach, I use dish soap because it seems a little more gentler) and you dilute it and pour it in bottle and let it sit for a couple hours, it gets rid of the smell and the taste. I also use one of those baby bottle scrubbers (I have no idea if this is what they actually are..but I hope you get the picture) and I clean as far as it'll reach and rinse it a few times. It works like a charm!

Sounds like you did get a bum one...I have quite a collection of these bottles....and never had a problem with them (ok, I did ruin one....I used it for my shake...but now that will be all I use it for)

They sell tablets and soups in most outfitters that are supposed to take away the taste and smell....I've never tried them

I have a sigg bottle, and they suggested using diluted viniger, and leting it sit for a while then washing out with dish detergent. It worked for me after leaving juice in my botte for a week, in the car, in the summer. let me tell you it did not smell pretty lol

I have a Nalgene bottle that I've had for five years now. I love it. It has withstood many, many drops without breaking, it can go through the dishwasher, and it's plastic, rather than metal. You might find you just prefer not to drink out of metal (I definitely do). They're about the same price - usually 8-12 bucks for a 1 liter bottle. You can either get the wide-mouthed or narrow-mouthed variety. I like the wide mouth bottles (much easier to clean), and you can buy a little removable insert to narrow the flow if you have a hard time drinking while moving.

I have switched to the plastic. The metal taste was not for me. I still have that bottle but I will never use it again, uck. Since I got the plastic one my water intake has doubled!!! I guess whatever works for you is the way to go!

I have a Sigg one and could never use it no matter what I tryed.  I gave it to my son and he says it tastes fine!  I agree that they give off a metalic taste.  I know use plastic refillable bottles instead.
