Stability ball office chair!

Quote  |  Reply

I read a post on the main forum here at CC that I can't find now to save my life, but it was about someone who decided to watch TV standing up. She got bored standing there and swayed side to side.. then started walking in place. Before she even realized it, her legs felt heavy and she knew she got some calorie burning in there!

Anyway, this led to a conversation about watching TV on your stability ball.. So I did that last night. And I brought it to work (also a suggestion in that thread) and am using it as my office chair! I tend to roll around and stretch and bounce. I'm not sweating off 100 pounds or anything but it has to be better than just sitting there. Plus I like it. It doesn't hurt my tailbone that I cracked several years ago jumping off a 40-foot cliff into a lake a few years ago,the bouncing would have to be benificial to my legs, and it causes me to use good posture.

I sat down in front of my computer just now to log my lunch calories and am on a stability ball I got this week!  It was funny to see your post - I'm not sure where I'd read about using one as a chair while working but the consensus seems to be that it's ergonomic and practically impossible to slouch while using it.  I haven't had to sit at my desk for long periods of time yet, so I'd love to hear how it's been for more than a few hours.

I agree that I'm more active on it, not a big work out but all the little calories used throughout the day tend to add up, plus it's way more fun than a regular chair.  I can't really do as much cardio as I'd like to due to a knee problem (ouch on the cracked tailbone!  glad the stability ball is more comfy for you, that's great :) so I'm trying to do a lot of little things throughout the day in hopes it'll make a difference.  Some therapy I just started for my knee actually involves using small rubber balls as massage/pressure points, and just having them lying around I've found I start tossing them a bit when I'm watching tv or would otherwise be totally sedentary.

Please tell me someone here watches the Office...

Well, there is this super funny episode with a stability ball...here is the youtube clip:

YouTube - Edited The Office Excercise Ball

soooo funny.

okay, but yeah, I do agree that it's better than sitting on your couch! Laughing is good for your abs too!!

Along the same lines of sitting on a stability ball during the day, how about wearing MBT shoes??  People say you rock back and forth while wearing them and it helps to tone and strengthen your legs, as well as burn a few more calories during the day.  I have been wanting a pair but haven't been able to bring myself to shell out that much money for a pair of shoes.  Anyone have a pair?

How funny! I was not the only one sitting on a stability ball at work! Smile

I love The Office, and that clip was hilarious! I don't think I have seen that episode before. Jim and Pam are my favorite TV couple.

The shoes, I don't know. I checked about them once-- read lots of reviews. Some said they worked and some said they didn't do anything. I tend to be skeptical, and like you, I don't think I can bring myself to spend any of my rare and elusive "spare money" on a pair.

I love The Office too, I'd totally forgotten about that clip and am not showing it to my husband at risk of severe mockery.  I'm still having fun with the stability ball, it's way more comfortable than the chair I'd been using.

Nice to hear that someone else in your office has one, I think I'd be a total chicken about bringing mine in to my old job though I'm sure everyone would get a kick out of it!

I hadn't heard about the shoes at all, sorry.  Am very shoe-conscious right now as part of my hopes to get an ongoing knee problem resolved, but that mostly means not wearing no cushioning or bad heels when traipsing around the city for long stretches.

Oh no, I am the only one at my office with a big round green chair! I meant I am not alone because you are doing it too! Our office is very small, 6 of us total, and everybody laughed at me, in a good natured way.
