I'm starting Stage 7 today - wish me luck! These workouts look killer: four sets with high reps and not much of a rest period. I'll have to experiment with finding the right weight for this so I don't flame out in the middle of the workout.
Originally, I was going to do these workouts at home where my husband has an OK setup in the garage, but I've decided to do most of them at the gym instead. (I have a better energy level earlier in the day.) It does mean that I'll have to get a good setup with all the DBs and barbells I need and "guard" it because the supersets include up to four exercises. With the exception of the lat pulldowns and seated rows, I'll be able to do the workouts as planned out. It's just that my gym gets crazy busy sometimes, especially around the cable stations, so if you give up your spot to go off to do another exercise, you're pretty much hosed.
Yeah - it was fun at first. But now when I know I have to work out, I sort of dread it. Almost done though. I ordered NROL, so I have to decide if I am going to move on to that or go back and finish stage 6. How did you like stage 6?
I just joined the stage 7 club and I can officially say that Laura, you are a crazy, wonderful, ambitious woman to do this stage twice! I think if I live through it once I will be quite proud of myself :)
To all of you who have posted as you've taken on these workouts - THANK YOU! I think it made a world of difference to know not to go crazy with the amount of weight. I used 15lbs for the lunges and for the rows, doing the 20 reps for the rows in workout one. And I started with 75 on the deadlift and lowered to 65 for the fourth set. The push-ups were the only exercise I couldn't reach the goal rep for on any of the last three sets.
By the end of it, 30 minutes and 300 calories burned, my face was fire engine red, sweat was dripping down my entire body, and I smelled BAD. It was awesome! I was too tired to do HIIT, but I did use the elliptical, which I love because it's nice to my knees, to make it an hour of exercise. And now I am home trying very hard not to stuff my face with the delicious cheeses my sweet husband set out for snacking. I think I can be successful in that effort, too!
Welcome to the stage 7 club, KMK! It is really a totally different kind of workout. The first workout I did, I thought I did lower the weights, but it apparently wasn't enough. I find the 2nd group of the 4 exercises to be much more do-able with the prescribed rest periods. On the 1st group, I take a little longer to catch my breath between some of the exercises. The first time I didn't and I felt puky enough to only do 3 sets! I learned to really go lower after that!
The pushups this last time I ended up doing the 30 degree ones for the last 3 sets instead of the full pushups. I also lowered the deadlift to 65 pounds and used BW for the lunges and 20 pounds for the dumbell rows. It was easier than my first attempt! I am doing 15 reps on everything except for the underhand grip lat pulls where I found it easy to do 20.
I have 2 more workouts in this stage and I haven't decided whether or not to repeat the stage. I may only because I haven't had the chance to read any of the NROL book.
Today I did the 4th workout for the second time. I went a little heavier than last time and only did 15 reps on everything except the dumbbell sqats. I like those so I did 20. Only 2 more workouts in this stage. Great going so far ladies. Lets get this thing done! I think I would have seriously destroyed some body fat if my eating was better. I just read a bunch of articles on figure athlete last night so I am motivated to try AGAIN to be more consistent with eating right. Why oh why can't I do that???!!
I don't know why... but for some reason after doing my 4th stage 7 wo this AM... I can't get enough food!!! I already had:
- Protein shake
- Oatmeal - big bowl of the cook it yourself kind
- plate of thin sliced beef and green beans
- another plate of thin sliced beef and green beans
- pretzels - I needed something!!!
I am still not really satisfied.
Edited to add - Laura - I loved stage 6. It was short and sweet! NO long workouts, no million reps!
I hate it when this happens - some days are just insane hungry days! Sounds like your metabolism is really cookin' though.
Yeah meg... except I'd probably burn more fat if I didn't eat all my calories back! lol How's NROL going? You out of the break-in stage yet?

Try a few glasses of water. That is my strategy for this week. Can't say how it will work but I'm giving it a try.
edit: or maybe if you have been diligent lately you need a high calorie and/or high carb day.
Try a few glasses of water.
I do hot herb tea, and go for the placebo effect with Good Earth original tea (decaf) which has cinnamon. Supposedly cinnamon helps ward off hunger / suppresses appetite.
Re: NROL, yeah, I'm in fat loss II, posting in Life After NROLFW forum.
Diligent - I wish! I had my son's 13th birthday party on Sunday and had cake and a sundae cup icecream. Last night I had to have another sundae cup icecream too! So I would say not. lol
I think it actually helps to have treats once in a while as long as it doesn't become a habit. I found that if I eat ice-cream once every couple months or so, I magically drop a pound. Funny, I know!
Anyway, I am ok now. I had some diet pepsi. Of course I am geeked and that probably helped - I had a positive phone interview just now. I am sure I am not a shoe-in, but the recruiter said the other two guys that he sent resumes for only had 15 minute phone interviews and mine lasted 35 minutes... so that is positive! I am keeping my fingers crossed as there are not many positions to even apply for!! I believe they are using 3 recruiters to submit people from & each can submit 3 resumes.
Thanks! I guess the next step would be to go in for an in-person interview if I am lucky enough to be selected for one!
Yogagirl - I'm so excited for your interview! Keep up the good work, and keep sending out those resumes. Way to go!
Thank you also for the great tips on the upcoming workouts - you gals have really saved my (turkey) bacon!
Thanks KMK - I am really hoping I get this one. I have an in-person interview Monday morning. Getting this job would be such a relief!
About the workouts - 1 more to go! whoo hoo. I think I will follow Laura and repeat this stage once more. Although it is alot of reps, I think it works for the "final cut", only it makes me ravenous! I really like the incline barbell bench press. Too bad he didn't incorporate that into more of the workouts. My hubby says it is obvious when I do those that my left arm is alot weaker than my right. He says my left arm comes down first and goes up last. I couldn't tell.
Anyway - I still feel the first group of 4 exercises he has us alternate in stage 7 is alot harder than the second group. I did the first group again today and it really knocks me out. I gotta take a longer rest than 30 sec on the 1st group. So I have been doing 45 sec rest. On the second group, I have it down to 35 sec rest. I think it is those lunges and pushups that get my heart pounding hard.
I have one more workout to go in this stage too. I had to space out the last three workouts because I was so fatigued. I ended up doing them on a Tues, Fri, and the last one will be Monday - tomorrow. And then I will take a week off. It was excellent, and my nutrition was OK too, except for one 2500 calorie day, which was sort of planned. My body just demanded carbs, and I complied. I was able to get my act together the next day. I will measure at the end of next week to see if I made any progress. I wont measure this week because my hormones are not cooperating right now.
Yoga - I will be thinking of you tomorrow during your interview. I am pulling for you.
-Laura
Good going on your nutrition Laura! I finished the last workout on Saturday and am probably going to redo the stage. I have been reading NROL and I found some very good info in there so far!
Thanks for the good wishes!! I am about to drive over there now.
Well - I was in my car and on the way to the interview when I got a call - interview is cancelled! I was soooo mad. I got all ready and was already on my way. I am not sure why it was cancelled yet. The recruiter is supposed to find out. This is ridiculous.
OK, stay positive. Maybe the person interviewing you is sick or has an emergency. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it is rescheduled.
