Star Trek
Anybody excited about the new Trek movie ST XI?
Anybody going to Trek convention in Jersey or the follow up one in Vegas? Leonard will be at both (Im just sayin ...)
I know you're just itching to be there!!! When you see Leonard....and I know you will........give him a hug for me will ya?
I'm looking forward to seeing the movie.

I must admit I'm not a trekkie, but hat new Capt Kirk is HOT and my favorite bad guy Sylar(zachary Quinto) is in the movie so I'm definitely going to see it at the IMAX Saturday.
Uh Oh my inner geek is showing :-)
oh my god i can't wait for the movie! me and bf haven't really talked about anything else in the past week we're both such nerds :B god i didnt't know leonard was going to be at any conventions! i wish i could go! you better kiss him for me tell him he's my husband
I don't care about the fact that it's Star Trek, but Karl Urban is in it.
Karl Urban is H-O-T hot.
'Nuff said.
What with Wolverine this past weekend and ST coming up, I'm in geek heaven. There has been a lot of chatter about the film, good and bad, with some staunch old-school Trekkers saying that it won't look the same (cheesy), but I don't care. TOS was great for its time, but special FX have come so far and we cannot and should not go backward. And Quinto looks great as Spock!
Actually won tickets to a pre-release showing of ST. Going tonight with DH. In fact, I need to leave in a few minutes to get home and hit the road. The theater is over an hour from us. We have to get our tickets by 6 p.m. and then we don't seat until 7:30 so time to get some food before the movie. Cinco de Mayo munchies here I come!
yes i am!!!!
Hubby and I already have tickets for this weekend - although if it were up to us we would have bought advance tickets for an earlier showing, but schedules, kids, and all that...
I agree, Quinto makes a very good Spock.
As for "purists" who like to go on about Star Trek "canon" (yes, there are die hard TOS traditionalists that use this term) - that's what new technology, innovation, and imagination are all about. I say let's take "To Boldly Go Where No One Has Gone Before" seriously.
Trek... Big Screen...

There is no 'inner' about my geekdom! You betchur sweet patoochi I'll be checkin' it out. What? Another Adam Sandler romantic-comedy?! Are you kidding? Uh-uh. I just hope it isn't as disappointing Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker. Gawd, he was awful!
From the trailers I've seen there is little, if any, of the charming campiness that was so endearing of the tv series. But gimme 'splosions & eye-candy effects over big-named stars anyday. Its what the big screen is for these days.
I have been hot for JonLuc Picard forever! But we are due a big-screen film about the original story anyway. Yea, the hub & I are there.

I am printing this out as my excuse for security after theyve pried me off of him.
Ive been counting down myself after learning of Leonards appearance in ST XI. Abrams and cast have sprinkled the talk shows but counting down to Leonard on the Today show Thursday and the View Friday. Just imagining him with the chattering ladies of the View - I cant imagine.

Im so excited this is getting absolutely RAVE reviews!! There so far seems no mixed feelings - its like an avalanche of praise. A bit early but rotten tomatoes has it at 100% so curious how it will end up.
I came in very resistant to anyone taking over Spocks role and was following all the conflicts of canon but since realizing nobody, not Leonard himself, can provide us with young Spock and the rest of the cast just had to open my mind to what sounds like a very creative and ideally character / relationship driven development of the the TOS cast. I understand it wont be entirely as action driven as the well done promos to pull in the young audience would lead us to believe.
I'm SUPER excited. Simon Pegg as Scotty is going to be great. I don't know a whole lot about Star Trek, but I'm going with a bunch of die hard trekkies (my boyfriend included) so I'm sure I'll be well educated by the time the movie begins. Plus, I used to watch reruns of the oooold episodes with my dad. Always liked it. :D Seeing it Thursday night at 7!
Saw it Thursday night regular screen, Friday IMAX screen.
Believe all they say - its amazing!
With almost 200 reviews calculated, Rottentomatoes.com has it at a remarkable 96% approval rating.
I can't agree more, Sun. Star Trek was FANTASTIC! I saw it last night and I can't wait to see it again. I'm a pretty die-hard Trekkie, DH is not and we both loved it. The theater applauded at Leonard Nimoy's appearance and again at the end. I was surprised how little it was like what we're used to, but it was a truly amazing evolution of the series that still manages to capture the spirit of TOS. I also thought they did a great job with the casting (and here I was thinking I was going to hate "Harold" as Sulu and "Eomer" as Bones). I'm really excited to see where it heads from here! My only disappointment will be if they don't make another one.
We saw it last night. I've been in kind of a pleasant fog ever since. I was thrilled with the ...ahhh...<spoiler alert>

I'm going to white this next section out. Highlight if you've seen the movie or don't mind being spoiled....yikes, I can't Well, don't read any more if you don't want to know.
...way that they got around canon, that this was an alternate timeline. Of course, it all makes sense now. Nero had been back in time messing things up for 25 years! No wonder they were familiar with the Romulans already. Ummm, can we save the variations in character ages? I don't know, but the movie and casting was so good that I really didn't care.
Bones was great! Complaining about space travel from the get-go and giving Kirk innoculations for all that ailed him. I was absolutely charmed by Chekov, Sulu and Scotty. (Especially Scotty!)
And Quinto...I don't know what else to say. He was stunning. As was the "new" relationship between him and Uhura. It was totally weird to see them snogging on the transporter platform (and Spock in his right mind at the time.)

I was upset when Spock wasnt cast as THIS young actor.
Yet Quinto and cast were all outstanding - Im not disappointed with one in the bunch.
Initially I was
about recasting of TOS (the original series), my only Trek. Leonards endorsement, though, opened my mind so I consiously dropped my expectations for a chance to enjoy (or dislike) the film for what it was without the preconceived idea of what it 'should' be.
Thankful I did as I was blown away while some fans I know who remained resistant to every way the trailers indicated this was not "their" TOS self-fulfilled that to be upset with the movie
.
Im also excited, plasma, about pending sequels! Im embracing the new crew.

Exactly. I feel bad for those going in with a canon checklist. Leonard put it well in a recent online interview:
I saw JJ quoted very recently on fan complaints of the kind you are referring to and what he said was something like "stay home and be angry" so just don’t see the movie, if that is what your life is about and that is the way you want to envision your relationship to Star Trek and the world, fine. This is a movie. It is a movie! You want to go see it — chances are you are going to enjoy yourself if you open your mind to it. If you go to see it to find fault and to point out the things you think are inconsistencies, chances are you won’t have a good time and you would have wasted your time and money so why bother? But if you go to it with an open mind, I think chances are very very good you will see very well made and interesting movie.
Among the episodes, TOS had its own own discrepencies and then the following films added to them. Its one thing to notice them but I feel sorry for the fans who get caught up in them and bent out of shape. Theyre missing the chance to enjoy this for what it is.
BTW shoe - great synopsis of the cast. I think Spock / Uhura was handled perfectly with a very light, tender touch and will be easy for them to back away from in sequels rather than had it been a more heated scenario.
One thing about the movie miffed me, though. I'll just go ahead and say this (SPOILER ALERT BTW!):
As much as I thought they handled the Spock/Uhura pretty nicely and love the fact that nuSpock's persona leans towards a more human self as opposed to TOS's Spock who was more into his Vulcan side, but that scene at the transporter pad...
Seriously?
I thought that kind of killed it, even if we (the audience) were supposed to be seeing it from a more humorous viewpoint (Kirk's). I mean, seriously? Earlier he was saying something about being against favoritism, so how would a few words from his dad make all that change? Errr..

He said he wanted to avoid the appearance of favoritism so he and Uhura, while seeming to be a discreet relationship wouldnt have been unknown or there'd have been no concern that favortism might be suspected.
I dont think his dad words were supposed to have changed that (unless I missed the connection between the two scenarios). Spock was time pressed and leaving for a life risking situation - I thought the display was pretty conservative considering. In that scenario, I'd have jumped him.
Wow - Leonard really said that on live TV?!
A cameo by Quinto, Pine and then by Leonard on SNL last night - and Leonard got past the censors, I saw it live.
Frustrated with the fans I mentioned in post #17, I loved this ![]()
