Just Started Jogging - No Weight Loss!

Quote  |  Reply

For about a year now I've been walking for 30 minutes 3 or 4 times a week.  I've seen slow but steady weight loss but I'm hoping to kick it into high gear this winter.  So, I added a little jogging in and upped my time on the treadmill to 45 minutes.

Three times this week I walked for a mile, jogged a 1/4 mile, walked another mile or so until I hit 45 minutes.

I rested for a day or two in between and after a week the scale shows I GAINED 1/2 a pound!

IS it possible for my body to be in shock after not running for 20 years?  When will I see the payoff?  I don't want to get discouraged before I even get started.  Advice please?

keep at it! You will see the payoff, not necessarily in weight loss. Its always possible that the new muscle use has caused them to retain some fluid during repair stage. That should go away over time. However the improvement in cardio is a big payoff. I started running/wogging of July (c25k training program) and have fallen in love with it. This past week got the news from my cardiologist that my previously enlarged left ventricle (slightly since 1992) is now normal! He attributed it to the running. But he still wouldn't clear me for a half marathon yet... am training for 1st 10k on 2/28. Have completed 3 5k's.

I agree sounds like water retention.  Happens to my hubby everytime he does cardio after skipping on it a bit.  He gets SO angry!  lol  It always goes back down though & his weighloss resumes.  I have to remind him allot to up his water to combat it.  May help you as well if you aren't already. :)

Are you doing any weight lifting/strength training? If not try adding 2-3 days a week of strength training to your current plan and you will see better results.

1 week of a particular activity is not enough time to see results. Keep on going and reassess after 4-6 weeks.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I am not currently doing any weight lifting.  I do like it, but I find that if I start too many new things at a time I get overwhelmed.  But I do intend to add it in.

Secondly, if I burned an extra 1200 calories this week exercising shouldn't I see something right away?

Also, I find that on the days I've jog/walked I'm NOT as hungry, but then the day after I am ravenous.  I know the general rule is to eat more on the days you exercise, but what if I eat more the day after?  When I was doing WW they said it doesn't matter because you should look at your food vs. exercise by the week, not the day.  Is that right?

You will not see results this soon. Just keep it up, add weight training as soon as you can. The more muscle you have the faster your metabolism will be and the more calories you will burn just living.

If you are hungry the day after eat a little more that day. Does not really matter. Exercise, eat clean and balanced and count your calories. Keep moving in general. Take the stairs, walk the dog, take the long way, park in the spot furthest away from the door when shopping, stand instead of sit. Just find ways to keep moving. It has been shown that people who are just more active in general have a faster metabolism than people who are inactive.

Drink a lot of water. Before and during your meal. Eat your food slowly, chew thoroughly. Think about everything you put in your mouth.

If you have been walking, the jogging won't make any difference for a while, and not until you are able to jog significantly more than you walk (distance, not time). You already have some basic fitness so probably you won't see the initial (post-water-retention, that is) change a newbie sees.

But, as others have said, it will pay off if you get your heart rate up higher than walking and stick with it.

Best of luck.
