Starting out overweight

Quote  |  Reply

I have found this site to help me lose weight and found out 2 weeks later that I was, excuse me, am pregnant. My BMI is classified as "overweight". If I could have just lost 8 lbs I would have been in the "normal" range. Although I would be most comfortable around 30 lbs lighter. I am 5'7" and 173lbs.  The max for a normal BMI at my height it about 165lbs but I was very comfortable at around 135.

I was around 135 when I got pregnant with my first and got up to 198 when I had my daughter. I got down to around 160 and just hung out around there for about 2 years. Over the last 6 months I have just gotten bigger and might have even hit 180 - I don't have a scale and the one I got on wasn't very reliable.

I weighed in at my 8 week check up at 172.3, I am now 9 weeks and feel 10 lbs heavier! I don't have a scale to check and honestly am afraid to get on one.

I am becoming introverted with my husband, I barely want him to look at me and it sucks! Any tips or tricks to feeling better about this?

Gah, I don't think there's any cure for the don't-look-at-me mentality. I still feel that way because, despite being just a few pounds over my pre-pregnancy weight, I still have flabby areas (especially the tummy). My husband tells me he doesn't care (I think all husbands/boyfriends/partners probably say this!) but I care. I totally understand how you feel.

You could always ask your doctor to help you maintain your current weight throughout your pregnancy. This would mean that you're losing weight but baby is gaining it. It would require the help of a nutritionist as well but your doctor may be able to give you a referral so it's covered by insurance. You'd have to be closely monitored to make sure baby is doing okay (as if pregnant women don't see the doctor enough!).

That is an idea, it would be so nice to come out at the end of the pregnancy with out gaining another pound! I don't mind getting back up to the 198 I gained with my daughter, it's kind of like I get to start all over again but that's only a 18 lb gain and I gained around 50 in the first pregnancy.

I think I will ask about a nutritionist on my next visit it might be nice to be able to lose some body fat as long as the baby is healthy. I have it so stuck in my mind I shouldn't work out and try to tone up while being pregnant for worries straining the baby or causing a miscarrage or early delivery. That is probably just my mental excuse because I hate to work out. =)

I did go into the bathroom here at work and do some squats and some push ups from the counter. It made me feel a little better. I think I just don't want to feel so jello - ish and bloated.

I also have a hard time keeping to a fruit, veggie and whole wheat diet. There are soooooo many tastey processed foods!
