Starting running again?

Quote  |  Reply

A couple years ago I was up to running between six to ten miles per day depending on the amount of time I had.  Slowly I started working more and subsequently running less.  When I found out I was pregnant about 9 months ago I wrongly decided to stop running altogether and stuck to a walking regimen.

After this baby comes out (any day now!) I would like to start running again.  I don't think my lungs or my legs are in the shape they used to be.  Does anyone have any recommendations for a quick yet safe way to get back to at least 3 miles per day?

I would start with a run/walk to start with until you can run continuously for 30 minutes.  That way you are gradually getting into the running groove without starting out to quick and hard and risking the chance of injury.

I started by walking . . . once I got comfortable with long walks, I started wogging (jogging, walking, jogging, etc.), then jogging and finally running.

Once you finally break through a mile or so of running, it's easy after that.  You'll get there.  :o)  Congrats on baby!!!

You could always use the Couch to 5k running program.  It may seem too easy for you, but it is a good place to start.

I am using it to get ready for my first ever 5k.  www.c25k.com has links to the program and things to help you out.

I definitely recommend a couch to 5K or an interval program to get started. I used this to get jump started at the beginning of this year. The first few workouts are very very easy only jogging for about 1 minute at a time. See how you feel and take it at your pace. I wound up doing the first 4 weeks' workouts just once each in the space of 1 week (rather than 3x per week each) since I had retained at least alittle bit of fitness from previously. I just finished week 7 which was a 25 minute jog and my speed and comfort are increasing noticeably with every run. 2 more weeks should put me up to a 5K or just over 3 miles.

Then onward and upward! :) Good Luck and Congrats on the little one!

I started running about a week ago.  I didn't think  I would ever enjoy it but I do.  Now I have to tell you I run in my house.  I bought the Wii fit and I do the free run it.  I will run 20 or 30 min a day, unless I have time for more, and it says that I run from 2 to 3 miles.  Not sure it is correct.  But like I said I really enjoy it.  Maybe when I lose a little bit of weight and our weather gets warmer I will take it outside.

carolynsue,

Definitely take it outside if you can. I used to run on a treadmill and be so opposed to outdoors....but now that I have started running in the fresh air, I find it so much harder to stay inside. Seems like the run is harder and longer when I'm staring at how much farther I have left to go, rather than just looking at the sights. :)

If you're wondering about running routes in your area or how far things are, check out www.mapmyrun.com. It's great for letting you map out how far you need to cover, find good routes others have already made and then it lets you calculate calories burned and everything. :) Very helpful.

for mapping routes usatf.org is also really good.  Also if you sign up thru runners world training log they also have a good route mapper, plus you can keep track of your shoe mileage traininglog.runnersworld.com
