How do I stay awake?

Quote  |  Reply

I know I don't get enough sleep but right now there is just nothing I can do about it. I work 35 hours a week and do school full time. Once you add gym time in there, more than six hours is just not happening on a regular basis.

So can anyone tell me tricks to stay awake? I keep falling asleep in class and i'm trying so hard not to! I usually bring food like an orange or peach but as soon as it's gone i fall right asleep...what should i do to stay awake?

Drink ice cold water!  You can either half-freeze a bottle then top it off with cold water, or use one of those sports bottles that you can add ice into.

That always used to help me during graduate school, when I was working full time AND pursuing a master's degree!

Coffee :)

Also, do you exercise in the morning or the evening? I find a lot more energetic throughout the day when I start my day with exercise, rather than ending it with exercise. In fact, on days when I say to myself "oh I'll just exercise in the evening" most of the time that doesn't happen - I'm just too exhausted! So yeah, exercise in the wee hours of the morning.

And on the weekends, try to catch up on sleep. It's not ideal to be like this obviously, but for a lot of people it's the only way!

Good luck :)

Caffeine, a B vitamin supplement. Even a general multivitamin might help perk you up a bit. I've never tried eye drops but I have heard friends swear perking up their tired eyes makes them feel more energetic in general. I also knew a friend who used one of those facial misters, but I thought that was kinda kooky because you pay for mostly water!

If you're working out every day or almost it's probably better for your health to work out less often and sleep a little more.

Sleep in class and study later haha.

Or ..you need more sleep! maybe naps in the day?

Thanks guys, those are all great ideas and i'm going to try them all! Today I did a combo I had an iced caffeinated diet soda (don't like em too much but the caffeine is great!) in class and I stayed awake for the WHOLE lecture. it was awesome I actually learned something today.

And I always work out at 5:30am it's the only time I have, it does help me wake up but, yeah, definitly cuts out some of my sleep. I think maybe i'll try sleeping in once a week or something cuz my first class isn't until 7a.m.

Thanks for the tips, if anyone comes up wiht something else let me know!

Stand up during your lectures. Its really hard to fall asleep standing up. I did it once... but that was in basic training, which doesn't count.

I tried some B-vitamin chews and I really like them except for they dont help me much in class. They seem to perk me up generally for the entire day but they are not enough to keep me awake when I am sitting down in a warm classroom. I may just try standing up from now on. the diet soda works but I jsut hate drinking it, i'd rather drink coffee or green tea but that's discouraged in my house soooo...i dunno. where else can i get a good shot of caffein that's in drink form?

I went to school full time, plus uni honors program and working 50-60 hours a week at the local psych hospital. I drank a lot of coffee and learned to adjust to getting sleep when I could (sometimes I had to work night shift... my work scheduled changed a lot). You can buy caffeine drinks that are just like... 1 shot of liquid. You can buy them at gas stations.
