Hey ladies. I'm a stay at home mom in need of a body and lifestyle makeover. I'm 5'5'' and weigh 258. I've always had weight issues and now that I'm home all day everyday, its harder than ever.
I'm wondering if there are any other stay at home mom trying to lose weight. I think it would be cool to support eachother. Sometimes staying home can be lonely and the temptation to go to the kitchen can be overwhelming. I've been really trying to stay out of the house but this has caused another problem: spending too much money!! My son is only 14 months old, so our outside play time is pretty limited. I think some support for eachother, some encouragment and some ideas for exercise and out-of-the-house ideas would be nice!
Get back to me if you agree ![]()
I agree. Stay at home moms can give great encouragement to each other.
Ive been a stay at home mom for most of the years from 1977 until now. My last baby is 17. She's going to leave the nest in another year or so. Trying to come up with ideas to exercise at home and keep out of the fridge is a struggle some days. Boredom eating is a problem for me. Your so right about spending too much money when out of the house. I like this new hobby/game of counting calories and working harder at exercise but it does get lonely and tedious without encouragement from others in similar situations.
Hi, I'm also a stay at home mum from UK though, I have 3 Children my son is 7 and I have 2 daughters one aged 4 years and the other is 20 months.
I'm about 5'6" and at 188 at the moment but I've been on here about a week and a half and it's come down from 191, so I'm feeling positive.
I love this site! Since I found it I've been on everyday & I'm getting a lot better with my food only thing is I cant eat something without looking to see whats in it first.
I agree with everything you have said and look forward getting to know you. ![]()
I, too, am a stay at home mommy. My son will be two in May. I am lucky to live in Texas, so it is pretty easy to get out of the house and move around. We walk to the park, play for thirty minutes or so, and walk back. I also just bought a bicycle with a carrier on the back for him so we can go further distances and experience new things. Those are the only suggestions I have for you. My mom swears that she lost weight after having babies by taking walks every day, 20-30 minutes long. I think there is some truth to that, and it is a good time frame especially with the little ones who get bored pretty easily.
Thats all I have for you. I am 5'6, and I started at 232 nearly a month ago and I am down to 224. I've been walking and doing a little bike riding, but mostly I have changed my eating habits. I have tried to put a lid on any eating unless I am hungry, and I think that has made the biggest difference.
I read a lot about the excess snacking that we, as moms, tend to do taking care of our kids. A bite here, a cookie there....it can add up. I try to combat this by making sure that if I fix my son something to eat, I eat too (at breakfast, lunch, dinner) but I only eat off of my plate, not his. It keeps those extra calories from sneaking in.
I think being a stay at home mom has its disadvantages (being so close to the fridge all day) but we also have the advantage of packing up the kiddos and going to the park, or around the block whenever we want. It would be nice to support each other....so good luck!
Hi, I am a stay at home mom with 6 kids ages 3-19. I agree it is hard not to snack all day. It has been a struggle for me, but since I made up mind to try to lose weight, I am doing much better. My daughter helps me stay on track, too. I don't buy anything that will tempt me, no chocolate bars, no chips. I buy a lot of gum, that keeps my mouth busy. I used to eat what my kids would leave on their plate because I couldn't stand to see it go to waste, now I just give them less and tell them to take more later if they want it. No more snacking my kids' leftovers. I also walk A LOT on a treadmill. It is still quite cold where I live and I have young kids so walking outside is not an option right now. Good Luck to all the SAHMs!
Another stay at home mom here! :) I am 5'2" and started at 184lbs and am down to 160lbs. My kids are 10 1/2 and 6 1/2 (yes the half's really do count :) ) I have done nothing but take care of my kids for the last 11 years and now it's time to take care of me ( I wish I was smart to do it when they where first born!) Walks are a great thing! When your kids are old enough you get even more exercise when you let your kids ride a bike and you are chaseing after them!!!! I have learned way's to still eat what the kids eat but limit my calories...If the kids have hotdog's I have a hot dog...I just buy myself the turkey ones that are way less calories...I am fortunate that my kids like veggies but at 14 months now is the perfect time to help your baby make sure they like there veggies to by encoperating them in your kids diet!!! The biggest thing I have learned (after waiting to many years to learn it) Is Make sure even though your a sahm is take time for yourself!!!!
Stay at home wife here ... I'm a kitty mom, does that count? ![]()
Good luck on all your weight loss adventures!!!!
=^..^= MOLLY
mollymouser your kitty is sooooo cute! My daughter would love her unfortunately dads allergic so I cant get her one. Not sure my dog would like it either although he was very good with our bunny which sadly passed away last year
Yes I think it counts.
my problem is i over eat once he is in bed. my goal i to eat dinner with him and not eat past 7pm. old habits are so hard to change. i do exercise on my elliptical everyday and take my son to playgroups or play dates or just outside everyday. it has helped him become more social and tires him out. Are there any mother goose programs where you live? it's where moms and babies get together and sing songs and rhymes. Check out your local library, in Calgary Alberta Canada there are lots of great programs that are free.
have a great day and good luck:)
I'm a stay at home mom as well for a 3 year old boy and 18 month old little girl. I just started staying home a month ago when I discovered I was losing money working (between daycare and gas money). I feel a lot of stress relief but the boredom eating that I did at work has followed me home. We have a big backyard but there's nothing in it and it has a lot of mudholes that we have to avoid. My kids love to run and play, but I feel sluggish from all the extra weight I've gained since having kids. I'm 5'6" and 215, my goal weight is 165 overall and 180 by my wedding in August.
Problem is....I love food, not just any food, sweet foods, sugar filled foods and breads/pastries of any kind! It's so hard to cut that stuff out! I have gotten myself to around 1600 calories a day and lost 10 pounds, but now I have plateaued! I know I need more exercise and probably another calorie cut, but I lack motivation!
I am also a stay at home mom. I have three boys 6, 5, and 14 months. I joined cc about three weeks ago and have really enjoyed reading all of the posts. I am looking to go back to my pre-baby weight of 140 and right now I am 190:( I am finding it hard to get to the gym between taking care of the kids and homeschooling. But things are going well so far. My husband is very supportive of my weight loss endeavor. This will be nice if we can support each other through this! Good luck to all of us SAHM's!
Things that help my sweet cravings . . .
- 8 reduced fat Nilla wafers (110 calories)
- 8 ounces of roasted butternut squash with cinnamon (105 calories)
- one-half a roasted acorn squash with cinnamon (86 calories)
- one medium apple (72 calories)
- Sugar Free chocolate pudding (60 calories)
- Sugar Free popsicles (15 calories)
- Sugar Free Jello (10 calories)
- Sugar Free sparkling water
- Sugar Free gum
- Decaf fruit-flavored teas
Raspberries and strawberries are also low-calorie and delicious, and you can even add fat free or sugar free Cool Whip (or another light whipped topping.) I really think keeping sugarfree jello on hand is a life-saver!

Hi, I am an "older stay at home" mom (52.... I had my son when I was 37). I am homeschooling him. We also have 2 kitties and a small dog.
I only joined yesterday with the hopes of connecting with others to help me through my journey back to health and fitness. It began back in October of 06 with the removal of my gallbladder. My AARP body is gradually being overhauled and rebuilt.
I have had extreme fatigue which made it hard to do much of anything, until it was discovered that my thyroid gland was very deficient. I have had the dose adjusted a couple of times and the energy level has improved dramatically. I also recently found out that on of my parathyroid glands is abnormal which also can lead to fatigue and other unpleasant symptoms. The offending gland will probably be removed this year. I was told that that will also make me feel much better.
My goal is to get my weight down to about 135-140 by June 2009. My heaviest weight was 215, and this morning I weighed in at 208.4. I am setting my caloric intake at about 1650 calories a day. I guess time will tell.
Molly, you are at home, and that can make it more difficult to curb excess snacking, so I think you are in just the right place.
OOOH, Me too! I am going back to college in the mornings but I still consider myself a sahm. My boys are 3 and 16 months. For me it is so hard not to snack all the time like they want to! Hubby and I joined the gym in Feb so that has helped but I've only lost 8 lbs since Feb GRRR!
Having some extra support would be awesome!
OOPS, forgot to add my stats.
5'3" currently 187 down from 195. According to cc I should be about 124 but we'll see how that goes, i dont' think i was even that small in high school!
Hi ladies, I'm another SAHM (although I do work one day a week, just for my own sanity- anything to talk to other grown ups!)
I have 3 kids, 11, 5, 3 1/2. I lost all of my baby weight thanks to nursing (yay for that!!), but have recently begun to put on weight. Not too much, just an extra 10 pounds, but I want to put the kibbosh to it before it gets even higher and then harder to get off. I can definitely relate to those moms who finish the food on their kids plates rather than throw it out, but I have cut that out for the most part.
I struggle with baking- I want to make sweets and treats for my husband and kids, but I'm the one who gets into them the most so they go without a lot (I tell myself they're better off without all the cookies and squares anyways)
Oh, my stats- 32 yrs/o, 5'6", SW- 126, CW- 123.4, GW- 110-115
Good luck to you all!!
Consider me a kindred spirit! lol I'm a stay at home mom too.
Hi- I'm a SAHM too. I have four kids 3-10. I am 5' 6 and 153 lbs trying to get down to 140. Snacking all day is the biggest problem. I am trying to make better choices. I love this site because I can see how many calories I am taking in. I now decide whether the food I am going o eat is worth the calories I will have to log onto here. I am waiting for the weather to warm up so i can get back outside for walks.
I'm a stay at home mom, but I do work. I work from home. I help my father run his business, and it's not easy. I help him run things a few days a week. Staying at home is good for me and my children. I get to spend more time with them. I have lost a lot of weight as "A" stay at home mom. I don't have to do any hard work labor, just answer the phone and order lawn motor parts.
Anyway. I lost 49 pounds at home. Once I am up.. I am up.. No matter how many hours of sleep I got the night before. I am up and moving all day. I do a morning thing, and I get a few toning moves in.
When I am bored out of my mind.. I lay on the floor and do a few sit ups. I think that is how I got my waistline down so fast. Once 40" now 32".
I do a lot of house work. I just stay busy. I think of my at home life as a job.
I even get up and get dressed for the day. I don't stay in my jam-jams. I just get up and I start my day.
You have to find your balance. That's my trick. Get up and start moving.
Lynn
thank goodness...I am a stay at home mom too...my oldest is 5 1/2 in kindergarten, and my youngest is two..I have lost about 4 pounds since starting back with cc..my short term goal is 180lbs by family reunion in july.. currently i weigh 202lbs.. overall goal is pre- kids weight of 150lbs.. size 10... i do taebo dvds at home and go to the gym.. I also run in place during commercials...I am trying to get at least a hour of exercise 5 days a week...I portion control...If it says a cup, i measure out a cup... feel free any stay at home moms to add me as a friend.. we need all the support we can get...
I'd love to join this group. I'm a stay at home mom with three young children - age 4, 2, & 15 months. Just joined the Y so I'm finally able to start getting some exercise after a long, cold winter. Also, just joined CC last week but I'm optimistic that it will help me got to where I need to be. I'm 5'4", 215.5 lbs, and 39 years old. I totally understand how difficult it is to avoid the call of food from the kitchen especially in the afternoon when all is quiet and the kids are sleeping. Best of luck to all of you.
With the choc Easter eggs kicking around, it's just too easy to see one lying on the floor and I've got to pick it up... since I've made the effort to pick it up, I might as well eat it (it's just one egg, right?). Now do 2 sets of 5 reps.
Am I the only one?
