well i mostly run...i sorta tough out the cold...

i also take aerobic classes at my school which are fun
there are some good workout videos that you can do in your house. I've done billy's boot camp which is fun and it's really good! I also like pilates! I also don't like to run when it's too cold out, but sometimes I make myself go anyway.
i have this same problem. if it was up to me i would be outside jogging every day but my mom won't let me go outside! what i do is dance to music, do jumping jacks, psh-ups, crunches, and i jog in place!

you could always try just taking walks. or cross-country skiing. I love cross-country skiing, and it's a great workout.

There was a New York Times article that said that it's not that you're inhaling cold air that's the problem...it's that the air is so dry. One suggestion would be to wear a face mask that covers the lower part of your face - or a balaclava. That would warm and moisten the air as you inhale and exhale.

My husband and I fell in love with winter hiking a few years ago. It's great exercise - especially snowshoeing - and it's a beautiful time of year.

My indoor exercise this time of year is cardio at my health club, and I do indoor rock climbing, which is great all around exercise. You use every muscle in your body. (Oh...and don't worry about upper body strength...climbing is more about your feet and legs than your arms.)

I <3 workout videos.  The best ones are tae-bo, they're very motivating, or old 80's aerobics videos.  My fav. right now is this Crunch Fitness Fat Blaster, they've got THONG LEOTARDS on!  It's so funny, it makes me laugh while I work out which is nice.  Old Jane Fonda or Cindy Crawford ones are funny too.  If you go to Salvation Army, they have loads of them for like 89 cents, it's awesome!

Brisk walks-you'll be warm in half a mile!

school aerobics class

I have a little routine i can do on the living room rug involving crunches, jumping jacks and light weights

You could get some resistance bands and a balance ball.  They are great to work out  with at home when you can't get out and they don't take up much space.  There are a lot of routines you can find online.  Good alternatives to free weights when you don't have the space or money for all the different weights.

I feared this same problem when I decided to lose weight. I saved up though and bought a Gazelle Edge Ellipitcal from Wal-Mart. It's the "lighter" version, basically cheaper, and was only $80.00. If your able to afford it, you can keep this in your house and it's always there! No matter if it's too cold outside, too hot, raining, snowing, or whatever. I've lost 101 pounds using this as my main source of cardio, so it works pretty well.

Cold air doesn't make you sick. Germs make you sick. You may have a tendency to get sick more frequently in the winter, simply because there are more germs floating around (it's flu season), and you spend more time indoors around people. Plus the air is dry so germs travel easier. If you want to avoid getting sick, try washing your hands more frequently and avoid people who are coughing and sneezing.

But don't skip the exercise. Cardio boosts the immune system. I was just reading an article in Runners World that says that under 50 minutes of running boosts the immune system. Over 50 minutes, weakens it.

I agree with you though that riding a bike in the cold just doesn't sound all that pleasant!! Jogging isn't quite so bad, as long as you dress appropriately.

Hey,

I'm a Maine girl so I have to deal with those long cold winters too and what a bummer it can be on your body if you don't have the cash for a gym membership. There are usually some free options in your community though. If you go to college there's usually a gym you can use that's included in your tuition, that's what I do. If you're not in school, is there a community center near by (mine has a jogging track that's open most of the day) or maybe a YMCA.

I was going to say that :p

It's available for the PC/Playstation/Wii/GameCube/XBox/XBox 360/basically everything. And it's excellent indoor exercise.
