How can I stay within the guidelines for sodium?
Asked by kaitlandsdream on Nov 18, 2010 in Nutrition

How much does sodium affect weight loss?  I am limiting to 1200 calories per day and a recommended sodium intake of 1300 mg. It seems impossible to stay within that! I am having a tough time.

Answer

The guidelines to reduce sodium intake are a public health measure. Sodium does not affect the loss of body fat, but salt may lead to fluid retention and to high blood pressure in turn for many people. Examine your analysis for sources of sodium in your diet and intervene on the most conspicuous culprits.  For instance, if you use lots of ketchup and marinades, then switch to salt-free versions.  Beware of all processed foods because they contribute the most sodium to the diet.  Read food labels carefully and buy the products with the least sodium. Choose fresh and homemade foods whenever possible, and learn to cook with salt-free seasonings, herbs, and strong flavors such as lemon and garlic.
