Those steamer bags of frozen vegetables - what do you think?
The quality is good but I keep thinking about all that's been said about microwaving food in plastic containers. I want the convenience but still have questions. Does anybody have an opinion or some information?
This week I tried the single servings from Birds Eye since they were on sale. The price per serving is way too high, but the baby brussels sprouts and the corn were really good and you can't beat the quick preparation. I didn't get the peas because I have a big bag already.
clairelaine, I personally think they're fantastic. I don't think there is much risk involved with the plastic bag. It's mostly plastic wrap that gives off those chemicals when cooked at high temp for extended time. Either way, I am hooked on the Birdseye sugar snap peas. The whole bag (3.5 servings) is only 140 cals and they are so sweet and good with just a little soy sauce.
I got the store brand of an Asian mix - snap peas, water chestnuts, carrots. It was really nice and made 3 servings for me.
Thanks for the feedback! Anybody else have thoughts about this?
I am a huge fan of the edamame! We keep about 4 bags of them in our freezer, and between my 1 year old and I we go thru them each week. And at about a dollar and a half each bag, it's a great deal!
I absolutely love the Birds Eye Steamfresh vegetables. I also read in my new book that they maintain almost as much nutrient value as fresh.
I agree with everyone...they taste great and are so convenient. I did try one of the steamfresh "dinners for 2" (it has meat and sauce also added), but that was nasty! I couldn't get past the first bite.
I also use the steaming bags(by Ziploc). You can also wash and re-use them a few times..the economy and convenience of these bags with my home-frozen veggies can't be beat.
I love the bagged veggies, it usually the only way I can get enough veggies. Sad, but true. Anyway I just tried the bags with the sauce in them. So far the Garlic one is the only one I like. The southwest one was a little spicy-er than I expected. Oh and I ate those before I started counting calories so I don't know how healthy the sauce ones actually were.
i buy the Birds Eye Steamfresh vegetables all the time. its such an easy way to get your veggies. as for price i always try to stock up when they are on offer and i dont know how many times i have done a weekley shop only for my fresh veggies to be past there best by the time i get to use them so end up wasting my money by throwing them out. id rather pay more and know they are always fresh.
I love the steam fresh veggies, and to be honest I don't know if I could have made it this far without them. being a working college kid I have limited space and time to cook dinner and normally I would make a low calorie dinner and not eat enough veggies than find myself hungry later. With the steamfresh veggies its so simple just pop it in the micro while I cook and it fills me so I am always full and getting the veggies in my diet.
I LOVE those frozen stemer bags! I even get the plain bags that you can add fresh veggies to (it really helps get some fresh veggies into my family). I think the problem with plastic and microwaving is with plastic that is not meant to be microwaved. The microwave bags are thick enough gauge that it's alright, I think, but I don't have any actual facts to back that up. But for at least while I'm in school, those frozen bags of goodness are going to suit us just fine, lol.
I find the frozen steamer bags fantastic! They're great. I wouldn't recommend the GREEN GIANT brand, because they have WAY too much sodium in them. Double check the nutritional information for sodium!
Thanks, that's good to know about the sodium in Green Giant. I'm usually obsessed with sodium content on everything else but took for granted that frozen veggies were simply frozen veggies. One more thing to watch for now.
