How do you do your Steel Cut Oats?
I just bought some Steel Cut Oats for the first time but I'd like some tips on how to prepare them since I know there are a zillion ways.
Also if I make a big batch at the beginning of the week, how will they be when I reheat them in the microwave (I'm guessing pasty).
And any tips on making them ready faster? I don't have a ton of time in the mornings to stand at the stove before work during the week.

I do mine in my electric pressure cooker (which is rearly a helpful thing to pass on).
I do a big batch at the begining of the week and it works really well. Just add a tidge of water to the bowl when you heat it up in the microwave & it gets nice and creamy.
joeschmoe, do you refrigerate them or freeze them? I used to buy frozen steelcut oats from Trader Joes that you just pop into the oven. But it was so expensive and they only came 2 servings per box. So I stopped buying them. It was so convenient, though, and I never thought of doing it myself ahead of time and then freezing or refrigerating them...
I've heard of baked SCO? with apples, etc? Anyone?
I cook mine in a little saucepan with frozen or dried fruit. About 1 part oats to 3 parts water. Let them simmer 10-20 minutes. Taste great and the fruit sweetens it up.
Dear mfchill:
Since you cook your steel cut oats in an electric pressure cooker, can I ask how you do it? Not only do I want to know, but an e-mail friend wants to know as well.
Thanks so much in advance!!!

10 minutes at 15 lbs pressure.
I'm making some right now.

I cook mine on the stovetop with vanilla soy milk. It's an easy breakfast for me; you really don't have to stand there and stir them. I'll put the milk on to boil, add the oats, then turn the heat down, let it simmer, and go do my hair. Breakfast is ready the same time I am! ;-)
I add water to them the night before and leave the bowl in the fridge. In the morning I just zap it for a minute in the microwave to heat it up.
I cook whole oats, not cut, just like you would rice. I do a large batch because they take a while to cook, then divide them up into measured portions in freezer bags. That makes it easy to get some when I want it.
I've made them in the crock pot -- 1 c. oats with 4 c. water, although I usually use 4 1/2 cups water and add lots of dried fruit. It makes them super creamy and there is enough for us on a weekend - and the house smells great when you wake up! Use a crock pot liner and the clean up is really easy.
i dont make a large batch of the stuff, i usually just use a 1/4 cup - 1/3 cup of oats and a1 cup to 1 1/2 cup water/milk combo. i usually sit my little stainless steel "oatmeal" pot with the oats to soak over night.
when ever i get up in the morning, i put the oatmeal on a gentle simmer and let it simmer for a while. It practically turns the oatmeal into a creamy pudding of sorts, its awesome.
