steel cut oats in a rice cooker?

Quote  |  Reply

can I cook steel cut oats in a rice cooker? if so, I am confused about how to calculate the calories for 1/4 cup of oats. I usually measure 1/4 cup and itis 150 cals.  sometimes, in the mornings, I just don't have the time. also, what is the best way to store it if you cook oats worth of one week?

Thanks

Interesting rice cooker idea....

I've never tried it, but I'd let them soak in their water overnight and push the button in the morning.  You might add some extra water - this slows the cooker down, and works well on hard-to-cook brown rice.  Calories sound about right for 1/4 cup.  Finally, I store my cooked oatmeal in an Anchor Hocking glass container with a snap lid - but just about any tight-lidded container would probably work.  You don't want them to dry out in the refrigerator.

Go by weight. Measure lets say 4 servings of uncooked oats. Cook them, and measure the  result, divide  by 4 to get weight per serving.

Thanks for the ideas.

UD, do you mean I measure the cooked oats then divide the weight by four and store, right? wow, how come I never thought about this before :) but I want to store them in the fridge. how long can they stay? I want to prepare oats for 5 days. ( the whole week minus weekends).

thhq, I am sure they will dry out in the fridge. I plan to measure 5 servings and put them in the fridge for the whole week. I was thinking plastic bags. maybe freezer plastic bags and store them in the freezer?? I don't know. I have plastic containers, not good? I can buy glass containers if I have to.

how do I eat it with milk? I think reheat it in a microwave with the milk, right?

Sure sounds like a good plan. Try with smaller ammount of servings and experiment a bit. Smile Keeps life interesting. A week in a fridge shouldn't be a problem, you can always freeze them in small baggies.

Aha, I've done this! It works just fine.  I can't remember if I used a 1:1 or a 1:2 ratio for the oats:water.  As for storing the in the fridge it's great, just store them in single servings and reheat in the microwave for about 30 seconds.  I liked to add milk/almond milk and frozen raspberries.

you guys are the best Smile

now, I am wondering if cooking in a rice cooker will make a difference?

steel cut oats is a 1:3 ration of oats to water. stove top or rice cooker. If your rice cooker has a brown rice setting, use that. 1 cup oats, 3 cups water, close, cook. I normally add a cup of milk once they're done and let the cooker sit on warm for another 10 minutes. Divide into individual portions and store them in the fridge, I wouldn't go over 5 days. 1 cup of dry oats makes 4 150 calorie portions (without the milk)

I use a crockpot to cook steel cut oats....probably very close to the rice cooker.  I use 2 cups of steel cut oats and 8 cups of water...cook on low for 8 hours...(overnight)..very yummy and makes plenty for the whole family for a few days.  It keeps well in the fridge for up to a week.  If you have a smaller crock pot...you can go down to 1 cup oats and 4 cups water.  I use about a med. sized crock pot so I make a larger amount at one time.

And I usually say 1/4 cup dry, without adding anything, is about 170 or so calories.  I don't add milk, but I do add honey or berries, or both, to it once it's done...Yum.
