sticking out tummy

Quote  |  Reply

I have recently stopped smoking and since was such an unhealthy eater before decided to become healthy to try and minimize weight gain during this process.  I am not fat and pretty fit but since eating healthy my stomach is sticking out (it didnt before!)  Is this too much oatmeal?  Do oats make a person become bloated? It is hard but definately sticking out.  I feel bloated and wonder if this is from too many carbs or something.

Oatmeal does have fiber in it, are you eating more fiber than usual?  If you upped your fiber intake drastically than that can make you bloated.  I have IBS and I'm always bloated but I notice that it fluctuates according to my fiber intake.  If you have any problems "going" then it may be the fiber but if not then I'm not sure.  Try drinking more water and give it a few days.  How much oatmeal are you eating?

Yes i have upped my fiber thats for sure.  i feel like i eat aot more now that am being healthy so maybe thats why.  Too odd.  i eat like 4 cups of oatmeal a day

That is probably it then.  1/2 cup of regular Quaker oatmeal has 4 grams of fiber so your typical cup should have about 8 grams of fiber.  That is a good deal of fiber IF you were not eating much fiber before.  It takes your body a while to adjust to fiber so usually you add a bit gradually to prevent the bloating, gas, constipation, etc.

I'm in your shoes because I eat TONS of fiber, but I am not going to give it up! I just eat fiber at night when I know I don't need to feel self conscious about a little tummy poking out... Of course, when I go out with friends, etc I will just eat a bit less fiber.

*Ingredients to help with the bloat: Fennel Seeds & Tea, Peppermint & Peppermint Tea, Digestive Enzymes, Hot Water & Lemon, Artichokes, Danelion Tea, Asparagus
