Stomach stopping me progress!!!
I was just wondering if anyone else has had anything similar happen to them...
I am on a weight-gain diet, recovering from anorexia, and trying to get to a healthy weight. My calories right now are not that high (only about 2100-2300) considering what they went up to when I was in IP last time (3500!).
Still, I am finding it quite difficult. I have been trying extremely hard to stick to the calories despite feeling full/bloated, and it works in that I gain a kg or so. But then, a couple of days later, I will get bad bouts of diarrheoa or vomiting, and I then lose the weight again and can't eat much. I have never purged, and don't ever want to, and so this is not a deliberate thing.
Today I have had the diarrheoa again, but this time it was (sorry to be graphic!) bloody, and so I went to my GP this afternoon. He gave me some antibiotics in case it is in an infection, but is seeing me on Monday to discuss what it could be and what can be done. I'm kind of worried - after looking on the internet - as it is apparently quite serious and could be anything from UC to bowel cancer. I am trying to convince myself it is fine though, and it won't be anything serious.
Anyhoo, I've warbled on a bit. But basically I'm getting very anxious over not being able to gain the weight through this sickness. I have about 3 weeks to prove to my treatment team I can do it, otherwise I'm being admitted to IP (not what I want!) so I'm getting desperate! I've heard dairy is a bad thing for diarrheoa, as is lots of fatty/oily things. Today has only been dry toast as I've felt terrible.
Any ideas? Anyone been in a similar situation?
Thanks!
Ack. I'm just wondering, but how much dairy do you eat? You could possibly (from what you're describing as symptoms) be lactose intolerant.
I would try a low-residue diet until your diarreaha calms down. There's examples of the sort of stuff to eat and avoid here: http://www.gicare.com/pated/edtgs02.htm Ignore the suggested serving numbers - obviously, you need more than that website would set out - but try to stick to foods that have minimal fats, fibre and dairy. Though I would try staying away from dairy completely and seeing if that helps as well.
I'm sorry your body seems to be rebelling against you D: I'm the opposite, personally - I have chronic constipation issues unless I eat masses of fibre a day! Only very recently have I had to play about lowering it a little again because I got, ah, "eggbound" after being better for a long while. D'oh. I wish you luck! D:
fiber will help the diarrhea to slow down and it is binding so make sure you don't turn to constipation as lalabanana states and yes stay away from dairy products as they will "curd" in your stomach and make you vomit. But continue to drink plenty of fluids so you don't get dehydrated even if you are still having diarrhea and vomiting. The main side effect of any antibiotics is diarrhea (FYI) so watch for an increase of diarrhea over the next few days and let the MD know this when you go Monday. Try dry toast or crackers to help settle the stomach also. I wish you the best
I wish I had suggestions - just want to let you know I know what it's like. Eating makes me extremely nauseated, and sometimes I vomit. I also have diarhea because of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I keep losing weight. Hopefully for both of us the doctors will help us find out what's wrong and get things under control, so that even if we're not gaining anything for a little while, we can at least maintain weight. I wish you the best. Try protein drinks mixed with water if you can handle it... Baby pablum also works sometimes for people who can't even keep crackers down. Just plain rice pablum is the best. It won't help you gain wait and probably won't even stop you from losing but at least you might be able to keep it down. Keep your electrolytes up too, since vomiting and diarrhea can dehydrate you.
Where can I see 1/8th or 1/6th of a pie or angel food cake?
This is the best way to picture a portion of pie or cake: Draw a circle to represent the circumference of the cake or pie (9" pie? 10" cake?... Read more
