Stomach weight

Quote  |  Reply

I've always been on the thinner side and still am for the most part but I've been gaining weight in my stomach. (not pregnant btw) I don't know if I should diet or target exercise my stomach but I don't think gaining muscle would deflate my stomach. Advice?

It isn't really possible to lose fat is specific areas. Your body has certain spots it puts fat and its different on everyone. Yours might just be the stomach. If you think your stomach is getting bigger then you are probably just gaining weight, no offense meant. If you want to deflate your stomach then your going to have to diet and exercise. You might be surprised how doing crunches will tighten up your midsection. Exercise wont make you look fatter, no matter how much you do.

alexandragillis,

Targeting your abdominals with core training will tighten up your midsection as dwill79 stated, but that will only show if you lose the fat covering the muscles.  Are you sure your weight is...weight?  A lot of things can cause a tummy to increase in size a little.

--Bloating: If you are eating foods that cause you to become gassy or retain water, your tummy could get a little bigger.  Drinking lots of water and regularly enjoying high-fiber fruits and veggies will help if that's the problem.
--High heat dryer cycles: Maybe your clothes are shrinking!  Haha :)
--Generic weight gain: Have you actually started storing pounds?  Most of the time, people don't realize they are gaining weight until clothes become too tight or they see a picture of themselves.  It could just be this is the most obvious place you've noticed it?

A healthy, balanced lifestyle will eliminate or improve most any ailment or condition though.  Good luck :)

I have always been on the slimmer side as well, but as soon as I put on weight, it goes straight to my stomach first. I wouldn't mind it so much except I'm very small chested, so it makes my stomach look even bigger (when my shirts fall off of my belly instead of boobs..ew..)

The only thing that helps my stomach to decrease in size is to lose weight. Even losing 2pds makes a visible difference in me. I don't know where you're at (losing, maintaining, etc), but maybe that would help for you as well?

To completely clarify dwill79's post: spot reduction is a MYTH.  You can't lose fat in one area without losing overall fat, so all you can do to reduce your stomach is to reduce your overall fat.  Diet and exercise, you can do it.
