How to stop becoming bored on the treadmil
I usually do 10 minutes running on the treadmil and then start doing intervals... but I get so bored! I could do intervals for longer but I just can't make myself stay on the treadmil when I'd rather just move onto weights. Are there any tricks to curing boredom?
get off the treadmill! sooo many other ways to get your cardio in!
Why don't you lift first (which is recommended anyway, after warming up), since it's better to lift when you are fresh - easier to keep form if you aren't already tired from cardio.
I assume you use an iPod.
Create a file full of songs that get your heart pumping, give you energy, and make it fun for you to work out! Then download it on to your iPod so you can run it specifically from that file alone!
If you don't have one...
Maybe switch up your cardio machines. Try elliptical, take a spinning class, or work out with a friend and do the treadmill together - compete with each other.
Monotony is the number one killer of workouts!
I put a movie in the DVD player, but I only walk on mine. 90 minutes of walking is good for me.
Similar to what Samantha81 said, I find using my iPod is great for the monotony of my time on the elliptical. I go through the iTunes podcasts and download various (free) runners'/workout music mixes and I create playlists from all of my high energy music. I also enjoy listening to audiobooks; I borrow them from the public library and copy them onto my iPod, then take them off once I've finished them.
I put down about 25 miles a week on the treadmil, but it's because I love the hell out of it. You shouldn't run if you don't like it. There's plenty of ways to do cardio. But if you do want to continue running, the ipod is definitely the way to go. I try to download music by one new band per week to keep things fresh.
I do circuits and I love them, I really love them. They brake up the monotony, keep your heart pumping, and you are always thinking about what you are doing next. Now let me explain....
I get bored just lifting or just doing cardio. I feel kind of dumb looking at myself in the mirror for 60 seconds in between reps and I get bored out of my brain if I do an hour of cardio straight....so a trainer at my gym suggested circuits.
I started off doing 5 minuets on the elliptical, then one round of weights upper or lower body (takes me around 15 minuets, no rest in between the different reps), then back to cardio for 10 mins, another circuit, back again to cardio for 15 mins and another circuit and then the last 20 mins cardio.
I now don't do much of the elliptical, instead I walk fast on an incline, hands off from the bars for 4 mins, hands on for 1 min and so on...It's another way of changing things up. Also I now do 15 minuets of cardio every circuit so I get a full hour.
I also use my iphone and watch TV shows, while doing cardio... but I am a TV show junky so that could just be me =D
I'm the same exact way!!!! I run outside most of the time, but on days when it rains i have no choice but to go on the treadmill :( It is so weird that I love running outside so much, but I cannot stand running on a machine.
Anyway - I just try to switch things up on the treadmill. one day I needed to do 6 miles, so I would run a fast mile, lift weights for a few minutes. Then hop back on and do another mile, then lift again, etc. etc. It was a fantastic workout and I was sooo exhausted after!
I also really try to push myself on the treadmill. I had to do a 7 mile run one day, so I started out my first mile at 10 minutes, second mile at 9 minutes, third mile at 8 minutes, 4th mile at 7 minutes, then back up. It was a fantastic workout as well, and I didn't really get bored.
If I try to go the same pace for an hour, well, it just ain't gonna happen lol.
My advice to you: run outside as much as you can, and on the days when you have no choice but to go inside, work on speed and interval training. good luck :)
