How I can stop binge eating?
It seems like every time I lose a little bit of weight, I binge eat and gain it all back again. What are some ways I can stop this? I'd like to lose the 10lbs I've been trying to lose for a while, but I can't do it because of this habit. It makes me very angry with myself. I never seem to feel full, so I don't stop eating, and don't realize how much I've eaten. I have trouble sticking to food journals and things, too.. Any suggestions for how I could stop eating so much?
I've had this problem as well... it's very hard to come to terms with, especially when you go way over. Although this may be a difficult thing to swallow (tasteless eating pun, I know), the fullness that you are looking to feel is not, in fact, the healthy way to eat. It really sucks, but you have to come to be okay with not necessarily feeling "full" when you're "finished eating." In the end, a lot of the time it all comes down to willpower. Good luck with it, I'm trying to kill the binges as well :)
how old are you? eating too little is likely to have this effect so make sure you're eating an appropriate amount and losing weight slowly. This is the most effective way to keep the weight off.
Eating loads of veggies helps too... makes you nice and full!
I use to try and diet and eat mostly veggi's and get only 1500 cals a day to loose weight as quick as possible. And EVERY SINGLE TIME I'd do good for a day or two, get rid of a pound or two, then freak out, binge, and gain it back. Now that I eat 1800-1900 cals I do a lot better! Track your cals on here and if they seem really low, trying eating 100 or 200 more (in a snack between meals) and see if that helps.
Also the kinda of food you're eating make a big difference. Eat lots of fruits and veggi's for fiber. Fiber keeps you feeling more full longer. Protein does the same thing so eat lean protein. And when you eat carbs, don't eat white bread, rather eat beans, leguems, and whole grains (like brown rice or quinoa). They have more protein and fiber -- white bread has high frutose corn syrup instead of nutrients. Also, don't cut out fat completely. Just skip out on the french fries and instead saute some veggi's w/extra virgin olive oil. Fat helps food leave the stomach at a slower pace, so just like fiber and protein it makes you feel more full for longer. These things also keep your blood sugar more stable and less blood sugar crashes means you won't want to eat junk as much.
Some of the things that have really helped me is that I try not to keep anything that I would like to binge on in my cabinets. I literally took everything out of my cabinets that I could possibly binge on and sent it to work with my husband to get rid of. That way if I am tempted to binge when I look in the kitchen and dont see anything I really like, I dont have that urge as much. I also keep lots of gum (sugar free) and fat free broth around to curve that binging. And if I just cant help but binge I try to do it on only fruit and vegetables that I like (with no sugar or fat added). This really seems to help, and oh, sometimes brushing your teeth helps too. When you do eat try to eat foods high in lean protein. This will keep you fuller longer. Sometimes going to the gym and working out will take that urge away too. Just get out of the house (or away from the temptation) and do something else that makes you happy. These tips have really helped me, I have lost over 65lbs!
There are some really great ideas on this post. I think that one thing I learned from the Army is that "If you feel hungry, you are probably dehydrated." I go through my day drinking a lot of water. Lots and lots and lots. I drink at least double the suggested intake. I wouldn't recommend that amount for you, but if you are at least taking in the daily recommeded amount, you should feel a lot fuller. If your lips are a little chapped and you feel hungry a lot, try some water. Also keeping with everyone else's suggestions I keep myself away from food during the day and I keep my wife around me at night. This helps me to not binge. Water is a great way to feel fuller.
Are you 10lbs overweight? Or is the 10lbs you want to lose just because you think you 'look fat'? Is your BMI in the healthy range of 20 - 25?
Bodies are quite clever things. If they're healthy and happy and at a sensible weight then they'll fight you tooth and nail not to lose more weight. They'll send you hunger-pangs, for example, to say 'give me something to eat'. It's a built-in survival mechanism. Bodies don't really care that you want to be 10lbs lighter for cosmetic reasons... they'll make you get the nourishment whether you like it or not.
So that's my suggestion. Rather than futile dieting and getting angry with yourself learn to love the body you've actually got. If you're already a healthy weight focus less on losing 10lbs and more on maintaining your weight and toning up your body with a healthy diet, some portion-control and more exercise. I think you'd find it a lot less stressful and frustrating.
Eat foods that are very high in fibre, fibre always makes you feel full.
Eat a protein with every meal and snack along with your carbs. It actually helps the carbs absorb slower so you don't feel hungry again so quickly.
And when they fail. I always just brush my teeth after every meal or when you're craving....nothin tastes good after you brush your teeth, lol.
Also, don't completely take out the foods that you binge on (which I'm assuming they're foods you like the most, and may be on the unhealthy side) when you are dieting or going for a lifestyle change. That's failure waiting to happen. Eat them in moderation...perhaps set up one or two days on the week when you can indulge (within reason of course) on these particular foods. Then you're still getting your occassional fix so you won't feel such withdrawel from it.
Or, if you're trying to take these foods out of your diet completely. Ween yourself off them, or better yet, find a healthy alternative that you find absolutely delicious. Then if you binge on that other food, at least your reaping the benefits of it's nutrients rather than fillers and empty calories of the other.
everytime you feel the urge to binge, get away from the house and go for a walk. and don't bring money because you might get tempted to buy something from a nearby store. it's hard the first few times but this worked for me
i didnt bother reading the above replies so i apologize if i repeat something.
anyways, im a recovering bulimic and anorexic. and if there's one thing i've learned a lot about, its about stopping binge eating. im resisting the urge right now. part of it is willpower, but only to a small extent. you're body is sensing that its hungry. it probably hasn't recieved adaquate nutrition throughout the day, causing you to be even more hungry and vulnerable later on. the only surefire way to eliminate binging is to eat enough, eat healthy, eat filling foods, eat no more than 4 hours between meals, and when a sweet treat is calling your name just eat one of the damn things and be done.
