Ok - so I'm sitting at my desk and minding my own business eating an APPLE...and one of my overweight middle aged male co-workers walks by and says "Do you ever stop eating?  You're just like me!  Stop it."  So I say back "this is actually how I lose weight - I eat all day to keep my metabolism up and running."  He responds with "oh yeah, that's it huh?" (rather sarcastically) UGH!  I just had to rant about how stupid some people are.  Seriously - since when do you critisize someone for eating an apple?

People say that to me too, and I have successfully maintained a 25-30 pound loss since august 08, and a BMI of between 22-22.5 (I fluctuate within the last five pounds).

In fact, some girls at school even said it to me when I was younger, before I was ever overweight.

People do this because of their own insecurities -- don't let it get you down!

Part of it may just be an aversion to your eating at your desk.  Depending on how "public" your desk is, this isn't always appropriate.  At my last firm the receptionist snacked on rabbit food all day long and it was really unprofessional.  You'd hear chewing when you called in... if you wanted to hand her something, you had to wait for her to wipe her hands off (and inevitably there would be food stains/water stains on the papers anyway), and she had a habit of standing and eating something like peanut butter on celery (probably part of why I loathe the smell of peanut butter now so much) while she was talking to you face-to-face - distracting, and a bird's eye view of half-eaten food.  Nooooot ok.

I'm sure you're not this bad, but it could be where they're coming from.  It's none of their business what you're eating or how much you eat - unless it's the fact that you're eating while you're supposed to be working.  Just a thought.  :/

I fully expect to get flamed for this post, but I expect there will also be those who understand what I'm saying.

Thanks Everyone!  you were all so hysterical, it's so nice to know that there are people on your side and in your same situation.  I just got back from a mini vacation and this is the first time I've checked this since Thursday.  I was laughing so hard and feel really motivated now.

Modifiedme:  Just so you know, I have my own personal cubicle and it's very common for everyone at my office to eat at their desks and work through lunch.  No one can see me unless they walk by and look in so I know it wasn't that.  On the other hand - I have worked a public desk before and we were not allowed to eat out there, only permitted to drink from a cup with a lid and straw so I do understand what you are saying.  No offense taken.  Wink

There is a lot of ignorance out there when it comes to food and nutrition, at work the other day one of my co-workers told me she was on a 'diet' and goes to the gym and l asked how many calories a day her diet allows, she says 'oh l don't count calories because some things are low in calories and high in fat, so l eat very little on weekdays and on weekends l eat whatever l want'. she says she loses and gains it all back....... l wonder why

People are totally ignorant.  My coworker goes on about how her stomach can't take fatty foods while she eats choclates as a snack and about how healthy her bagel blt is (that she bought from the coffee shop, so it's HUGE and covered in grease) and how great her lunch is because it's a chicken ceasar salad (covered in bacon bits, creamy dressing and croutons)......ummmm, no **** you have weight issues, you have NO idead what you're putting in your mouth.

I also had an apple at work and it was delicious.  That guy's a bag of douche.
