How can I stop feeling defeated early in my weight loss?
Asked by jmishia on Oct 22, 2009 in Weight Loss

Now that I'm starting to try and lose weight, yet again, how do I stop from feeling so defeated and depressed when it's not going well?  I have a roller coaster ride of losing weight and it seems the first time I stop losing or don't lose in the time that I feel I should, I get really depressed and down.  Is there anything I can do to maybe stop this from happening or do you have any advice for ways to change or prevent these feelings?

Answer

The scale is ruining your best intentions. Weigh yourself upon starting your diet and then once a month on the fifth day after your period starts for your "driest" weight. Redefine success as a loss of 3-4 pounds a month, and then focus on that changes that are under your direct control.  For instance, focus on eating 5+ servings of fruit and vegetables and exercising for 30+ minutes a day, or completing your food logs, carrying your lunch to work, giving up soda, or whatever you feel like tackling first.  Focus on one day (or even one part of a day) at a time and reward yourself for every good week of practicing your new behaviors.
