How do I stop myself from eating in my sleep?

Sometime I notice that I eat in my sleep. I wake up with crumbs on me or candy wrappers on my bed or someone finds me munching on something but being asleep. I have a slight recall of doing that, but no control over it. It happens once or twice a week; however, my sister noticed that it only happens when I am trying to lose weight. I have tried integrating small treats into my diet and eating something small right before I go to sleep, but nothing seems to help.   While I have become accustomed to my healthier eating habits and don't have intense cravings like i used to, I feel like my subconscious wants those things so badly that it manifests itself when I have little to no control over my actions - when I am sleeping.  I don't want this to sabotage my weight loss.  Is there anything I can do to make this stop?

Night-eating syndrome (NES) may be a combined eating disorder, sleep disorder and mood disorder.  Early research shows that the problem could be related to a blunting of the sleep hormone, melatonin, and a failure of leptin, the satiety hormone, to rise at night.  In addition, stress and medications may play a role. The most popular sleeping pill, Ambien, might cause a small number of users to eat while asleep.  Some doctors treat NES with the antidepressant, Zoloft, or the anticonvulsant, Topamax. Meanwhile, aim to lose weight slowly by cutting no more than 500 calories a day, reduce stress if it is a problem, and visit your doctor for more help.
