How to stop snacking?

Quote  |  Reply

I need some help because before my diet i was a HUGE snacker. reeses peanut butter cups, leftover pizza, soup, hummus and pta bread, cookies, cookies, cookies o.O you name it and i probably ate it in the last 7 hours. the point is, im trying to cut down on snacking and stick to well portioned and well timed meals ratehr then dozens of unhelthy snacks all day long and a large dinner. my problem is that i still havent gotten used to eating only 3 real meals and now whenever i get bored i feel the urge to pick up a doughnut or a cookie to nibble on, then before i know it, its gone and i want another! My adhd makes it hard to stay entertained with one thing for a long time so i figure my best bet is to just teach myself not to snack, but its so difficult, does anyone have any helpful hints??? pleasse =\

Instead of trying to stop your snacking, maybe a more realistic approach would be to eat healthier snacks, like fruit, raw veggies, or anything else low cal. If you have had this habit for a long time, it might be hard to break, so instead of stopping all at once, try limiting how many snacks and types of snacks.

Good Luck.

thank you, ill try to start snacking on carrots instead of cookies or maybe a honeymoon salad with a spritz of light dressing, i just wish i knew some way to simultaneously cut down on the snacking

I'm a religious snacker, but I budget in snacking throughout the day (to keep me from every feel hungry enough to eat whatever's near me) and I plan out healthy, low cal snacks.  Fruit and veg are to best, a pint of raspberries is like 40 cals, a pound of strawberries is about 120 cals, carrots have very little calories and feel substantial.  I can satisfy my sweet tooth with fruit instead of candy or pastry.  Plus fruits and veggies have tons of fibre which is great for weight loss.

I also try and drink a big glass of water whenever I have a snack, to help feel just that much fuller.

Don't feel bad about snacking, just plan ahead and have healthy options with/near you.

I am having success with 6-7 meals per day.  No need to snack.  I keep all meals between 200 and 600 cals.  I'm a fairly big guy so I'm losing weight by cutting intake to 2400 cals/day.  My higher caloric meals are usually lunch and dinner.  So I guess you could say I eat 3 meals and 3 snacks.  I'm cutting carbs drastically so my snacks went from cookies, candy, and chips to cottage cheese, protein shakes, mixed nuts, and salad.

Im a snaker too and had this same problem. I solved it by eating a 3 big healthy meals aday like breakfast lunch and dinner. Or another way is to drink bottled water it filles you up faster. Today i had 1 soft pretzel and a bottle of water and i was filled til dinner.

haha i no what you mean. adhd...hate it lol

but what i do is chew gum,

and if you feel like snacking, just dont let yourself spit the gum out and your cravings will pass....as long as you get yourself to start thinking about something else

o and btw, if there is a Costco near you, buy one of the huge boxes of gum w/like 20 packs in it

they are only like $10 so its alot cheaper that buying individual packs

:)

oh, get sugar free gum

Allow yourself 1 or 2 snacks a day but make sure they are healthy.

Drink plenty of water.

Don't keep crap in the house.

Will power!! number one. Make up your mind and do it.

I love to snack sometimes more than I like to eat. For me, eating 6 small meals a day is perfect. You eat like every 3 hours and it's easier to eat less calories because you feel full. I've tried so many diets- shakes, onion soup, atkins, s. beach, ect. Eating 6 times a day, and counting calories was the one that got me to my lowest weight ever, I could never stay on the others. My cravings for junk food dissappear because I'm always eating. Sometimes it's annoying to plan and measure your meals, but the end result is worth it! It does take time, but I went from a size 6 to a size 3 in a couple of months.  Buy a food scale, it's the best investment!

The best way to stop snacking is to eat real meals, that have a good mix of protein, carbs, and fat.  If you stay full, you'll be a lot less likely to snack like crazy.  Obiviously eating healthier snacks is a great thing, but stop for a moment and re-evaluate whether your meals are substantial enough to carry you over.  =)

Just substitute healthy snacks for the unhealthy ones and you can nibble to your hearts content. Nobody ever got fat eating vegetables so you can have as many of them as you want! Fiber One cereal is good for you and only has 30 calories in a quarter cup (and it takes a long time to nibble if you eat it dry) I add 12 chocolate chips or a little dried fruit to it to give it more flavour in each bite. Hummus is quite healthy, it's the pita bread that's doing the damage - substitute low-calorie wraps or light tortillas etc or dip veggies into your hummus. Grapes or berries or an apple cut up into very thin wedges take a lot longer to eat than a cookie... and so on.
