stopping birth control
I was put on birth control to get my period back, and I've gained like 10 pounds since then, and I'm at a healthy weight (120ish at 5'7"). I feel like my period will be back by now and I really don't want to keep taking it. I'm obviously going to talk to my doctor, but I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. I've been on it for six months so I've been having a normal period since then. Do you think I would still get my period if I stop taking it? Or am I still at too low a weight?
It depends on more than body-weight as to whether menstruation returns. Your BMI is still under 19.... which doctors will tell you is the level where you are highly likely to lose periods. Most would recommend you aim for BMI 20 to be in the 'safe' zone for regular periods. If you're under stress, if your diet is poor (insufficient fat and iron), if you do a lot of exercise... all of these will affect your ability to menstruate as well
Suggest you talk all of this through with doctor and discuss whether it's appropriate for you to stop the medication.
I was given birth control to get my period back too. I took the birth control for a year before reaching my healthy weight. After I reached a healthy weight of 120 at 5'5" and a body fat % of 19.4 I decided to stop taking birth control to see if I could get my period on my own. I stopped taking it in February 2008 and just got my period back on my own in October and I did not get it this month, so it is still not normal. I am trying to make sure I eat enough fat and not over exercise hoping to get a regular period. I asked my gyno about it and now she won't put me back on birth control until they figure out if there is something wrong, so she keeps sending me for tests. I also have to monitor my weight closely because I know I when I weigh 115 I do not get my period, so I know going any lower than I am right now is not my healthy weight.
I would talk to your doctor, but I don't think I would stop taking it until you know you are finally eating the proper nutrition and exercise normally.
