Stressful job makes me tired

Quote  |  Reply
I work on insurance claims for hospitals and dr. offices and it is so stressful.  At the end of the workday I am exhausted.  I got over a bad throat infection about 3 weeks again and I think I have some lingering effects from that.  I have been having such a hard time wanting to go to the gym because there is so many people there.  I feel bad for not going and feel stressed when I'm there.  Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Sounds silly but have you tried going when there are not a lot of people there?

Are you not going because you are tired or because of the number of people?
When I first started going to the gym I felt the exact same way... I was already stressed from work and all the people at the gym stressed me out more.

If going earlier/later isn't an option for you (it wasn't for me) I recommend bringing your i pod/mp3 player. Either crank up some music pretty loud or load some audio books. I prefer audio books, because I really concentrate on them and zone everyone else out.

After awhile you'll get used to the routine and the workout will help you de-stress from your workday.

As a side note, gyms are always pretty busy at the beginning of Jan/Feb due to everyone's new year's resolutions. Soon enough the herds will start thinning down and there will be less people-- just don't let yourself be one!! Keep going and it will eventually pay off!

It's both. I am just so tired and I have a bit of social anxiety so when there's a lot of people I get very uncomfortable. I live in a small town and my gym merged with another gym so it's a lot of people at all times. I've even gone at 8:00 saturday morning and it's still pretty busy.

I know exactly how you feel, I pull LOTS of overtime, work about an hour and a half from my job, and have a household to run, a child, etc.

I found what helped me was going to the gym during LUNCH!  Then, I just get a salad at Subway, or bring something with me from home and eat it after I get back.  I've been able to stick to my gym, and don't feel so tired at noon as I do at 6:30 pm.  I'd never make it to the gym if I did it after work.  Good Luck, and hang in there!

When it seems you're too tired to go to the gym, try to remember that it will give you more energy if you go work out. Seems completely counter-intuitive, but exercise is invigorating.

Also, ignore the other people. It is entirely possible to go to a crowded gym and interact with no one - don't even have to make eye contact with anyone if you don't want to. Just take a book, get an exercise bike or something & tune everyone out.

Just do it! That's a cliche, but it's true. Your drive time may vary, but all it takes is about 1 hour from start to showered & done, so when you are 'negotiating' with yourself about whether to go work out, tell yourself "If I stop thinking about it & just do it I'll be done in an hour & I'll feel better when it's over. I can do that!"

I know exactly what you mean.  I am an Air Traffic Controller and raise a son and it's stressful and honestly, work out regardless!!  I know it seems weird, but when I work out, I feel awesome!! Cardio of course.  Cardio just sends all of this stuff through your body that takes away stress! Seriously do it!

I know you feel weird there, I do too.  Seriously I do.  I just put on the ipod and ignore the world.  Just don't look at them.  Are there TV's?  Plug your headphones into the TV thing and lose the world.

The worst is lifting weights.  A room full of guys that just stare at you.  It's soooooooo embarrassing and I HATE it.  Especially if you're straining on some weights and they're looking.  I just say, "Self, who cares about these people, I HAVE to do this to look good and stay healthy".  Music helps a lot.

Try it :)  I know it seems impossible when you come home and feel DEAD tired.  When you do it though, it's sooooo awesome and rewarding.
