Stretch marks :(

Quote  |  Reply

I got LOADS of stretch marks on my sides and back (muffin top area) when I gained weight. I've been trying to lose weight since January so far and I've lost a few lbs but I'm planning on exercising a lot more and losing about 15-20lbs by August. It's just I'm sooo worried about getting more stretch marks. Do you think it's likely that I will?

NO!!!  You do not get stretch marks from losing weight, they usually develop from gaining/losing (YO-YO)... For instance, I have lost the weight before and when I gained it back I got them... each time I lost and gained i got more.  However I always got them when I gained it, not when I lost it.  In fact I have noticed that if I work out (stay toned) get a little healthy color (from the sun or daily moisturizers with a bit of tint) and stay hydrated (H2O) they are not that noticable.  ALWAYS REMEMBER... They look worse to you!

Yeah I guess, thanks.

I thought you could get from losing weight because I found the leaflet that came with some bio oil I got a while ago and it said about stretch marks from losing weight :\

I think you might notice them more... HOWEVER I have never got new marks (red/purple ones) when I have lost weight.

We might all be different though.  Keep your head up, everything will be ok :).

that gives me hope then, lol :)

You don't get stretch marks from losing weight...I mean, they're STRETCH marks because you get them from your skin being STRETCHED. The cream might have been to hide already existing stretch marks for after you lose weight, in order to make them less noticable, because unfortunately once you get 'em they don't go away as you lose weight...but you don't get new ones.

no, you won't get any more if you're losing ... losing weight doesn't cause them, gaining does.  but when the skin starts to "deflate" with weight loss, that's when you can see them.  I have them on my hips and my lower belly from pregnancies ...

I can tell you this, though they won't ever go away ... the redness or purplish coloration that some of them have at first WILL fade.  mine are all silvery/white now (10 years after last baby) and are not terribly noticeable.

I got stretch marks in high school. I ballooned up big time. Even if I loose the weight I will probably never go shirtless again.

My sister started getting them on her inner thighs. I don't remember the reason why because she didn't gain weight. She went to the doctor to have some kind of laser thing done to them. My mom says they are pretty much gone. Unfortunately they can only do something when they are still red/purple. Once they turn white they are pretty much there forever.

I gained weight fairly quickly.   A couple of years ago, I went from 175 to 205 in less than 6 months, and I got some on my stomach, inner thighs, and armpits.  With time, they become whiteish, and they don't really show.  Obviously when you lose weight, you will stop having new ones, and they will pale out, and when your skin gets firmer they won't show as much.

Awesome arent they? Ive got them on my butt -_-, and boobs. I am hoping maintaing my weight and using just oil as a lotion (cant stand the icky feeling of commercial lotions) will help.

If you lose more weight you might get a few more? But probably not. How much more are you thinking of losing?

Ugh. I have them on my butt and knees! KNEES!  Either I had fat knees or a growth spurt. Hehe.
I didn't get anymore stretch marks from losing weight.. but I NOTICED them more.

exactly, you can't see them while you're still all stretched out!  especially the ones from pregnancy ... haha, they're on the underside of your belly, where you can't see!!  then, when the baby is born, and you can see your stomach again ... BLECH!!  :)

moisturizing may help diminish their appearance somewhat (and it is probably healthy for your skin, in general) but they are scar tissue.  so unfortunately, nothing is going to make them go away completely.  but as was noted above by someone ... no one else will notice them as much as YOU do.

i didnt know they turned white, im super pale so maybe itll match :D

Cocoa butter allegedly works on scarring and stretch marks.  I put it on the stretch marks I got from my teen growth spurts.  Even if it doesn't work, you get really soft skin.

me, too ... I'm a lilywhite magnolia blossom, and now even I can only see them under direct light.  it's not so bad.

I share your pain about stretch marks... and I'm only 16! It's tragic, really. I've had stretch marks since I was about 9. They're mostly on my inner thighs, though. Anyway, you should try Avon SuperShape. It's a lotion that takes care of cellulite and stretch marks. It smells good, and it feels minty... which sounds weird, but do you know what I mean? It just feels cool on your skin. Anyway, I don't really think you could get more if you're losing weight rather than gaining it. Good luck, and try Avon! It rocks!

Hi,

I replied in this forum regarding the stretch marks. Pardon me for repeating...but have u tried applying Vit-E cream over stretch marks. It does really helps. Do try if u haven't :) and good luck.

I swear I got them from losing. I was always big from a really young age. And then the first time I decided to lose weight I got stretch marks, huge and pretty much all the way around from one side to the other across my belly. I felt like it was some sort of sick punishment, cause I finally was losing weight but could still never actually show off my stomach because now it is all scarred up.

Hi! No I don't believe you get strech marks from loosing weight. Think about it. You're shrinking so why would your skin strech. As for getting rid of them. My mother swears by coco butter. She put it on every night while she was pregnant and she doesn't have them at all. I guess that works for preventing them though I'm not sure about getting rid of them. Next time you go to the doctor, ask him/her about it. There are actually prescription cremes for that. There's even a surgery if they bother you that much.
