of FAT that is !!!!! Cool

I've gained the notorious Freshmen 15 and now im working out with a personal trainer.

She has told me before we started that we were going to focus on fat burning exercises, other than just lifting weights like I used to do - along with cardio.

I have only worked out  with her once so far && this is what we did:

  • Instead of dealing with heavier weights (10 kgs, like i used to), she made me use really light ones (less than 5 kgs, i think) but more reps than 10-12. Like..... 15-20.
  • After finishing 2 exercises, she made me run 300 meters on the treadmill immediately. I was running 11 kph (i think it was kilometers), which is like... almost 7 mph. I was really running lol!! But it lasted like... 3 mins.

This was one set.

After I finished running, she gave me 2 mins rest and then made me do 2 other exercises, then running again.

We did a total of 5 sets of these.

Was the purpose of this keeping my heart rate up??

My ultimate question is...

Do you think this is better for losing weight than just simply lifting REAL weights and cardio??

I mean, i understand that right now, my goal is to burn the FAT, not BUILD MUSCLE. But I don't want to lose too much of my muscles and look thinner but flabbier....

HELPPPPPP!!

You will only lose muscle if you stop using it.

Sounds as if your PT has you on a moderate form of a circuit HIIT.  Keeping your HR up. When you say you rest for 2 mins...is that complete non movement or does he/she have you walk, march, ...etc?

From my understandings of how muscle gain/toning and weight loss works is with the cardio you're burning fat, and then by using less weight but more reps you're toning your muscles rather than building them. i dont think you'll lose muscle mass but rather lose fat and tone/define what muscle you have. and by doing cardio (raising your heart rate) then lifting weights, you're increasing the number of calories you are burning with the weight lifting than when you separated the two, because your body is burning them faster because of the increased heart rate. so basically id stick with what your personal trainer suggested/put into place because it will help you lose the fat faster which will show the muscle you have better.

toning really isn't anything different than building. if your muscles can already lift 30 pounds, but instead you start doing a bunch of exercises with 10 pound weights, you're going to lose muscle mass. I say you should definately do all that fat burning, but not give up your weight lifting routine either. Your trainer needs to go back to school.

You cannot tone muscles as a separate activity from muscle building and fat loss. It is one or the other or a combination of muscle building/fat loss that causes muscles to appear more toned.

OP - Not that this isn't a valid question you're asking, but why have "urgent" in the title... It's not really.

fitnessgirll

- well during the 2 mins rest, she made me drink water but didn't OBSERVE me lol.

- OH NO!!! I think i DO need to send my trainer back to school hahaha!! Today was kickass though.... it was circuit training and it definitely showed me that I had awful endurance *major sigh* Frown But I think I will do like what u said - keep lifting weights. I think I'll work out with her once or twice a week, and then once or twice on my own, lifting weights. Thanks so much!! Wink

- So................ I wrote "urgent" because I was really really curious and also was thinking about not working out with her (after that one time) if this wasn't how I should work out. Quite a lot of money.

I just get annoyed when people claim to be professionals and knowledgable in their field but then tell people things that aren't true.

If working with this trainer keeps you motivated then good. I know I do a lot better when someone is watching me and telling me what to do. But definately keep weight training. Its good for you, besides just making you look better.

sooji...MA MA...what up?.....girl you could use the weight....keep it, and make it work for you.

danaofdoom

- Well, looking good is something quite important... Tongue out Hahahaha~

Thanks for the advice! I'll make sure I do weight training as well! The trainer does keep me motivated, for sure. I mean.... the stuff that we do? I'd pretty much never do them if I was on my own. Too effin' tiring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a question.... yesterday (2nd day w the trainer), the heaviest weight weighed 5 kgs (11lbs) each and... some of the exercises (w 3 kg dumbells) was really difficult for me. Like it required endurance, u knw? Do you think this could be considered weight lifting??

eddiepotter

- hey eddieeeeeeee Laughing lol, yeah I DO think i need to keep up with the weights!!

hey, could you answer my questions right above this one?

lol....not really....he probably had you doing high reps so...it's more endurance oriented.  I do the same thing with 10 pound...1,000 punches until I can barely lift my arms...so that when I'm in a fight, I can keep punching as if it was still the first round  (granted we only have 3 rounds :)

eddiepotter

- Frown Hmmm.... so she (trainer)'s not really letting me build muscle strength is she........ dammit, lol. But what would happen if I only kept doing lighter weights, high reps - kept working on my endurance?? Would my muscles stay the same?

If you have muscles capable of lifting say 30 pounds on a given exercise, but you only use 10 pounds for it, your muscles will deteriorate to the point where 10 pounds is all you can do. Not instantly of course, but over time they will deteriorate.

But make sure you are eating enough for all of the exercise you are doing. I need to average about 1700 calories a day just to keep my deficit from going over 1000 calories.

hayleymajayley

- 30 lbs total right? haha. The heaviest I lifted for my chest was around 45 lbs. (two 10 kg dumbells) ................. seems like I'll have to get going on that again. DONT WANT MY MUCLE TO DETERIORATE!! All the damn hard work.... hahahaha!

You know what... I haven't really counted the # of kcals burned since....... well, a long long time. I weigh about 159 lbs... how many calories do you think I burn for an hour of weight lifting?? If I insert my weight into my CC profile (i haven't changed my online weight forever hahaTongue out) and then search for exercises, would the calories burned written be for my weight?

Really sorry if that sounded confusing!

i'm deleting this post it made no sense whatsoever.

danaofdoom

- Maybe it's because I woke up at 4 am today, but let me get this straight.... so you're saying that a gallon of milk or a child is considered heavy weight??? And you're saying that a soup can is the lighter weight?

Really sorry for sounding so dumb, but I read your post like 5 times very slowly........ but I didn't reach the "Ohhh!!!!" part.... *major sigh*

lol I'm sorry that was poorly written. I've been running on like, no sleep lately.

I don't even remember where I was going with that. Embarassed

Here's a calculator where you put how many minutes you typically spend doing different activities a day. Sleeping, walking, weight lifting, sitting, stuff like that. Put in enough time to cover 24 hours, and it gives you about how much you burn in a day.  I have different routines different days, so I figured out my burn for my different routines, and I found what my weekly average was, so I aim for 1000 less than that, which is still 1700 calories.

I was just using 30 lbs as an example :] If you lift 45 pounds keep working your way up from there... definitely don't go any lower. If you are eating at a deficit your muscles will not get bigger, but they will get stronger. There's a difference! Push yourself with your weights... women (myself included!) tend to underestimate how much they can lift. When I found out I could squat 25 pounds more than what I'd beend doing I just felt like I'd wasted so much time..

and yes, I believe the calorie burn that CC shows for the exercises is according to your height/weight.

danaofdoom

- Hahahahahahaha!!! Lol that was funny!!!

hayleymajayley

- Oh thanks!!!! Today I went to the gym and worked out on my own (w/o trainer) and did REAL weight!!! Haha!! It was sad to see that the 20 kgs (44 lb-ish) that I used to lift for my chest were really difficult !!!! Cry Loved hw my mood went up after I finished working out!!!! yayyyyyyyyy~~~~~ Laughing I will definitely up my weights while eating less to lose this freshmen 15 haha!!

When do you think it's time to up my weights? When I can easily do 12 reps???

Endless questions on the same thread... maybe it's time you took some initiative and did some research yourself.

Yes, keep going up on the weight until you find that your last 1 or 2 reps are a struggle.
