I have my burn meter set to sedentary and add in any daily exercise, washing etc.

Well today was my first day back in college and I was in class for 6 hours. I looked up "School" in the activity log and was surprised to see an option that i fitted- sitting in class, note-taking general class discussion.

It says i burned 500 calories over this period of time. Is this really possible because i feel like taking notes, listening to my lecturer, arranging folders surely cannot burn that much??

I'm pretty sure that it is 500 calories over that time period and should replace the calories you would have burned sitting at home watching TV. Not 500 additional calories.

I've been there....the only calorie burning activities at uni usually involve chasing a member of the opposite sex or alochol... or a combo of the twoWink.

Oops, I only added in 4 hours, 6 hours was 750 calories and when added to my burn meter it moved it up 300 calories. That is a quite a lot considering i burn any where from 200-500 calories from exercise a day. I just really can't see how practically sitting there, writing a bit, talking a bit burns THAT MUCH!! But if it does, awesome!

It's telling you what your body burns at any given time.  You can look up sleep to.  You burn 112 calories an hour.  Basically at any given sedintary time your body burns around 100 calories and hour.

If your level is sedintary then you want to look at things out of the ordinary.  Exercise, extrenuous work, actively playing with kids- these are things that would be in addition to.  But things like sleeping, typing, watching tv, are already included.

That's really interesting! I'm wondering how that is possible. After a full day in class I feel lethargic, hungry, and the last thing I want to do is work out. Maybe I'm the exception to the rule... Hmmmm...?

think about all the incredible processes your brain has to go through to think

and to create new memories of complex theories and ideas of course you're using energy for that. that's why it IS important to EAT EAT EATTT

i would say that being in a 4rth year quantum physics class would burn way more calories than being in a 1st year pottery class though

Your body constantly burns calories on it's own.  Things like breathing, digestion of food, thinking, your heart pumping, all your bodily functions, small movements such as writing, wiggling fingers or toes, moving your head...  Everything burns calories but exercising burns even more than just sitting there.  So yeah... It's possible to burn calories while sitting in class.

Okay so minus approx 100 calories per hour, which is required to just sit upright and that equals 150 cals. Divide that by 6 hours. It equals 25 calories. This is how many calories you burn each hour taking notes and listening. Not that much really. 1/4 the effort of just being alive.

The same goes for your exercise. You need to minus the calories you would burn normally by sitting still or laying down to get a more accurate measure.

spoken by someone that has likely never hefted hunks of heavy wet clay onto a pottery wheel and done the work to create pots! LOL! Harder than it looks :)

I do agree that intense mental work also requires increased calories - good calories, not refined sugar energy.

Also, when you are on campus, you are walking to and from buildings in between all the sitting and being brilliant.
