Stupid irrational fear foods

Quote  |  Reply

Recently I've been really frustrated because despite having come a long way in recovery, I just CANNOT seem to overcome certain food phobias. There are a few very specific foods which I am terrfied of- all completely irrational because I will happily eat the same amount of calories/sugar/fat/carbs in another guise.

So I was wondering, does anyone else have these lingering ED 'blocks', what are they, and how did you get over them?

Mine are: olive oil, cake, pizza, fruit juice/smoothies, milkshake, baguette/french bread, pastry

I can sort of relate - I'll eat certain foods that have similar calorie/fat counts, but completely avoid others.

I've gotten over almost all of my irrational food fears though. The only thing I really still stray away from is any sort of bread or sandwich made at a restaurant, and some really sugary fruit juices (with no fiber) like pomegranate or apple juice.

Both of these are recent threads on fear foods with good advice. You just have to tackle these things head on, really, to ignore the voices and go for it.

I have a lot of food fears too...but I'm still recovering from my ED. I had my first relapse in June and my parents put me back in the recovery program in August. I freak out every time milk, cake, regular ice cream, pizza, fried food, and cheese is put in front of me. And the Ensures *shudders* I wish I could help you get over your food fears, but seeing that I can't even get over mine, I can't.

Yes, I can relate. I eat all these foods regularly too, and while they are still difficult, eating them more makes them easier (well, once in a while since they are treat foods, so like once a month).

Peanutbutter

Nuts

Bananas

Juices

White Bread

Chocolates

Bratwurst

Macaroni and Cheese

French Fries

Icecream

Butter

Milkshakes

Cookies (I only like Oatmeal Raisin and Dirt ones though)

Apple Fritters...

I've had all of these so far, too. It's not really the calories that freak me out as much as the lack of nutrition. I'm in a bit of a high-protein rut right now, I have to have my daily calories from protein be of a higher percentage than my daily calories from fat :/

Butter D:
White bread
Pizza
Tomato Soup? :s
Avocado
Hummus + anykind of dip

GROSS

oh god i read dolly and i just thought of another, sour cream,  if soeone puts butter, mayo or sour cream on my food, i just refuse to eat it,  true any dips its he idea that these things are mixed together and someone could have thrown anything in, except for taziki, because i know its safe....

Do any of you cook?.....  Seems there's a big feeling of insecurity surrounding 'not knowing' about the content of food, that it's 'unsafe' in some way or believing that it's not nutritious.  (Bananas and nuts are intensely nutritious btw)

My 8 year-old is a little unadventurous about trying new foods and the way I overcome that is by getting him in the kitchen, sleeves rolled up, and helping me make it.  Once he's weighed out the ingredients, cracked a few eggs or wielded the wooden spoon, he's much more willing to give whatever the end result is a shot.  It's also a huge amount of fun! (Fun with food being something that sadly gets lost during eating disorders?)   Maybe if you were to do the same thing it would help?

This is my biggest overall problem!!
I have been eating the same foods everyday for almost a year.
I am scared of a wide rang of - most - foods.
The majority of my diet consists of baked potatoes with tuna, wholegrain toast, salads, cereal and lowfat yoghurts. Being a Brit, I can face drinking tea with milk and two sugars. Which is strange because if anyone offers me sugar in or on anything else i'd think of them as insane?

We really should start a group where we challenge ourselves to try and introduce a new food every week and report how we coped up on CC etc,.. :)

Anything I don't know the calorie content of

Pain in the pinfeathers!

Anything prepared by someone else. If it's not a steamed veggie, a steamed APPROVED veggie, I will not eat it at a restaurant.

Pathetic as it sounds, I won't even drink diet coke when I'm out, either. Most places don't see it as a big deal to accidentally swap a diet/regular, so I need to have three different people taste it and weigh in. I realized once that it wasn't diet 3/4 of the way through, and I literally broke down. :(

i can't drink my calories.

other than my morning coffee (to which I add half and half), I seriously, SERIOUSLY cannot feel safe drinking a calorie.

For a while, pasta was a no-no.  And bread that wasn't commercially "light."

Oh, and peanut butter.  I can eat it now, but I can't eat nuts.  I just am too afraid.

And cheese, too.  Unless it was fat free cottage cheese, I wouldn't eat it.

These are foods I haven't eaten in 7+ years, that hopefully I'll be trying soon:

-pizza

-cake, ice cream, candy, chocolate, pie, brownies, pretty much all desserts

-beef

-chicken pot pie

-any restaurant food

-caloric beverages

-pasta

-sauces or spreads

-butter/oils

-most (pretty much all) breads

Ice cream, cashews, and chocolates are my big ones.

For some reason when I have them I just can not stop after just one. Or just a serving.

Today I had 2 lindt truffle balls. I'm pretty proud that I didn't let it defeat my attitude. Small steps, small steps. Smile

Who does this help? Unless you are listing these foods so you can later conquer them then this is totally unproductive.

Okay, first off, I know how you feel. I've been through anorexia first-hand and it's normal to have a fear of foods, especially ones with little amount, but high calorie/fat/saturated fat/sugar/carbs/sodium/etc/ amounts. However, my mom is a VERY good cook, and a healthy one at that. Avocados, olive oil, and peanut butter do have a  high calorie/fat content, however, they are VERY nutritious and are GOOD fats. As for ice cream, cake, chips, and junkfood, it's OKAY to eat them in moderation. I used to HATE eating anything that was fried, or even had a little bit of oil, like pizza. If I had no choice but to eat pizza, I'd pat my pizza with a paper towel for literally half an hour before I was sure all or at least most of the oil was off. Now, I'm still not a fan of pizza, but I mean, if I have to eat it, I just eat it. I love all foods, although I try to stay away as much as possible from the "unhealthy" ones. I don't say "bad" foods, because NO FOODS ARE BAD!!! They just aren't as healthy as others. Don't discriminate foods because of their nutritional values. I learned that counting calories, examining foods, and etc. is really just a waste of your time and life. After all, you only have one life... are you really going to spend it counting calories every day???

I hope you lose your fear of foods very soon. It took me almost two years because I refused to get treatment by a doctor.  But it really helped (: And I'm just happy that I don't cause my family trouble anymore ^^

Wow, I really don't get why you guys won't eat bread or pasta or GRAINS.

If you look at the food pyramid, you DO know, you need 6-11 servings each day??? =_____='' Even when I was anorexic, I ate bread... and a LOT of it (:

Yeah me too I eat my candy and chocolate since I recovered But I wont go near pizza, hot dogs, burgers, soft drinks (only drink water), or pastries and cake,

I had an ED but I got scared when I ended up in the ER, i was getting pins and needles in my left arm and preasure on my chest, couldnt walk right..turned out I was malnurished and they gave me a vitamin shot and amongst other things...now i have to take vitamins after every meal.

"I don't cause my family trouble anymore" Thats how I felt and sometimes still feel.

i'm slowly starting to incorporate real sugar into my diet. and full-fat salad dressing.

I conquered some fear foods like:

nuts (cashew nuts are the BEST!)

pizza (And I HATE the thin crust ones...where's the fun? American pizza all the way! ^.^)

Soymilk

WW Pasta

Ice cream (full-fat is better!)

There are others but I can't remember them. I still have to conquer these foods:

White bread/pasta

Beverage with calories (milk, juice, regular coke)

Cookies

Candy Bar

Olive oil

White creamy dressing (alfredo, blue cheese, etc)

Beef
