Stupid Question Alert! Frozen Yoghurt!
If I wanted to make frozen yoghurt at home, could I just put a tub of yoghurt in the freezer? Does that work or not???
You can do that of course, but don't go expecting luscious and creamy, ice-cream like texture. Its going to be ice-like, and come out in an impenetrable hunk. It's still yummy, and takes a longer time to eat.
Thanks for the reply! That's what I thought might happen!
Not that I mind the ice-like texture, but is there a way of avoiding it? Say, like when you do homemade ice cream and you have to keep stirring it every couple of hours to stop ice crystals forming???
i stick mine in the freezer allllllll the time...
usually an hour or so makes it really good. Sometimes 30 minutes if i can't wait the whole hour haha
i like the yoplait thick-n-creamy the best, it stays... creamy
Mix the yogurt with a little juice and pour into an ice cube tray. Then, after it's frozen, pop the cubes into a blender. Makes a yogurt slushee. If you re-freeze the slushee, you get closer to the texture you want. You're trying to add air to the mix. I like to freeze juice in ice cube trays, and then just blend with the nonfat yogurt and fruit for a smoothee. Just watch serving size. It's still got calories in it even if it is nonfat yogurt and unsweetened juice and fruit.
Another thing is if you let it sit for about 5-10 minutes after freezing, the iciness tends to disappear a bit.
Back in the 1950s, we used to make an ice cream in the freezer. What we did was pour the ice cream mixture into a flat pan and take it out to beat it with a fork every 15 minutes or so. That stopped the formation of ice crystals.
Or you could spoon your yogurt into popsicle molds and have a yogurt ice pop.
I highly recommend Edy's Caramel Praline Crunch frozen yogurt. I know you were looking to making your yogurt at home, but I haven't been able to match the creaminess of this. WARNING: It is highly addictive!
If you're just looking for an ice cream substitute, you could use fruit and milk instead. I mix about a half cup of frozen mixed berries and 1/2 to 1 cup skim milk in a blender for about a minute. It comes out similar to ice cream, and it's much better for you. Sometimes I add vanilla extract, honey or brown sugar if I want a little kick.
EDIT to add: make sure to get frozen fruit that has NO extra sugar added. You could also use fresh fruit, but then you have to let it firm up in the freezer for 45 minutes or so.
Oooh more yummy ideas thanks everyone!
My flatmates are going to hate me, I'm gonna take up even more room in the freezer (it's pretty much full of all my stuff already haha!)while I experiment with ice cream and fro-yo!
Sometimes it's OK totext in a restaurant.
