Hi!
My question was regarding Subway "6g of Fat or Less" sandwiches.
Are they really that good? I'm addicted to the Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki, I have it with only lettuce, cucumber and pickles, no salt or pepper, and only low-fat sauces (sweet onion, and honey mustard) on wheat bread.
I'm concerned that maybe I'm taking in more calories than I figure - I'm counting on around 363 per 6" according to their website. Plus another 42 cals for cheese, 27 cals for their honey mustard sauce and 34 cals for sweet onion.
All up: 466 cals. I have been eating a footlong (932 cals) for my "big" meal of the day - lunch - and then either side of that I make up the other 500-800 cals. I've never been able to eat a big dinner, so eating well during the day and very little at night works for me.
So, is Subway really as good as I think/hope it is?
geez a footlong sub for lunch?
keep in mind with the sauces that the website is estimating a low portion, and the employees usually load it on thick. Try getting it with no dressing and bringing your own low cal stuff to put on it.
with 48g of sugar from the sweet onion sauce .......and 2440mg of sodium in total in a footlong, I don't think the Sweet Onion sub is the best bet to eat at Subway. Of course, going for the 6" is better. But if you want to have the footlong....I recommend the Roasted Chicken with about 300 less mg of sodium and a whooping 32g LESS of sugar......(about the same sugar amount as a regular coke) Subway DOES have great low fat subs, but be careful of the sauces.
I'm going to have to agree with Michael on this one re: the amount of sauce, and its contents.
when i go to subway i usually go for a 6 inch on whole wheat, dry, no cheese, and just mustard. being able to cut out the mayo/sauces can save you a TON of calories, as well as sodium. cutting out the cheese was the hardest, as i LOVE cheese........
there's my 2 cent

Gnarly story: when I was in highschool I used to eat a footlong double bacon blt from Quiznos in one sitting. With mayo. and Chips.
YUCK!
I have started eating at subway for my lunch. I try to keep it to the low cal subs. I use to tell them double the meat now I have them pile on the veges. I have dropped the mayo and the salt and add pepper and mustard. So far it is working for me I haven't got sick of eating them yet and I have actually made it out of the store without a cookie, soda or chips. My goal next is to start eating the veggie sub well maybe next week. LOL![]()
i really like the toasted ham+american cheese sub, im not sure how many fat grams it has but i dont think its terribly high in cals.
I work at Subway and I find that they are my highest calorie days. The sandwich calorie they show doesn't take into account any of the condiments or cheese and assumes you are getting all the veggies.
The only way I find to have a really healthy sandwich is with no cheese, no sauce except yellow mustard or deli mustard, all the others may be fat free but are very high in calories, especially the sweet onion sauce, it is SO sweet and full of sugar.
Obviously they are a LOT better than your average McDonalds or Burger King, but don't think that since you're going to Subway it's automatically healthy. ONLY the sandwiches on the 6 Grams of Fat or below menu are truly very good for you. And the Tuna, one of the worst, we put in SO much mayo it's disgusting.
Your best bet is a veggie with one slice of cheese and deli mustard, that's what I usually get, and pepperjack and American are a lot lower calorie than the cheddar.
Hope this helps!
I rather enjoy the ham and roast beef sub and it has no sauces or sillyness. Load it up with veggies and a very small amount of light mayo. Keep in mind the people who work there usually try to grab regular mayo and then gop it on. I just make them remake it. If you go there enough, they will remember the meaning of a little light mayo.
I get a six inch veggie delight (not the veggie patty) with avocado instead of dressing/mayo. I don't know if you can get anything healthier from Subway.
When I go to subway, I get them to rip out most of the bread, I loose about half the bread calories and have lots more room for veggies! I also try and stay off the sauce if I can, I just found out that sub sauce is mostly oil. It seems (from the website) that the best sauce is the southwest.
The first time I asked them to rip out the bread, I felt crazy, but they don't seem to think its weird at all. I got the idea from an episode of Biggest Loser Australia.
I just load 'em up with banana peppers. They have such a bite that you don't miss the mayo or anything else.

I do like the American at subway. What is your opinion on the Red Wine Vinaigrette you guys have?

What do you mean, the best sauce is the southwest; as in tasting the best or the least amount of calories? Cuz I really really like the southwest sauce...or wait, am I thinking of the chipotle - or is that the same. I'm so confusing myself now! I haven't been to Subway for awhile so don't remember.
I like banana peppers too and I never use mayo anymore...just load on the mustard.
Im not really a big fan of bread anyway, when I go to subway I always have a Veggie Delite salad & diet coke. The salad is apparently under 60 cals? I never have sauces or cheese with it, so is that an accurate estimate? They do pile the salad plate rather high... But it's only lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, jalapenos, onion, olives etc so thats okay right?
The Chipotle Southwest Sauce (all one word) is the best tasting imo, but second worst for you after the regular mayo.
The Red Wine Vinegarette is okay I think, a lot of stores don't have it anymore, just the Red Wine Vinegar and Olive Oil, which there's really nothing in the vinegar so can't imagine it would be bad for you. I never get it though, blah, tastes funny.
umm how many calories would this be?
6'' veggie delite on wheat or italian bread with mustard, and all the veggies.
+ two slices (four triangles) of cheese.
edit: been eating badly lately, and going out with friends to a mall for awhile so have to eat dinner there :| need the healthiest possible option,
@acyland: Yeah I've noticed the red wine vinegar that Subway has tastes 'off' I guess. I love red wine vinegar on my subs everywhere else (No oil, extra extra vinegar and a dash of tabasco). For some reason all the stores around here still have the vinaigrette, and it's quite tasty
