so i have just begun my weight loss journey, and i just have a couple of questions about my two favourite snacks:
subway(sandwiches): if i were to get a veggie sub once or twice a week, on ww bread, with mustard a small bit of sub sauce, would it interfere with my weight loss? or, do you think that that would be considered a healthy meal?
sushi: sushi is my FAVOURITE food of all time. of course, i love all the greasy tempura and whatnot as well, but i know that i can't eat that. so what is the deal with regular sushi; like a california roll (seaweed, sticky rice, avacado, cucumber, and crab) with just a little bit of sushi sauce (or soya sauce)? would that be ok to eat every so often? or do you think that it would also interfere with weight loss?

Well, I can't help you with the subway question, but as long as it fits in with your calories and you still have a deficit, it shouldn't hurt you at all.
Now sushi is my very favorite food. I could eat it night and day. The white rice is empty calories, meaning it doesn't have much nutrition, plus sushi rice has a lot of extra sugar mixed in. To make it healthier, I make my own. I actually prefer it over resturaunt sushi. That way I can control how much sugar goes into the rice and how much rice goes into my rolls. Then I load it up with the good stuff (vegetables, fish, shrimp, ect.) and I'm good to go. My favorite thing to do with friends is have a sushi party. But, I've lost 30 lbs and I eat sushi like a madwoman! :-) And you can eat the tempura and still lose weight as long as it fits into your calories. Good luck!
PS- Making your own sushi is A LOT cheaper than buying it.
What do you mean "interfere with weight loss"? As long as you have a healthy calorie deficit, (as far as weight goes) it really doesn't matter what you're eating, you'll lose weight. For over all health (not just losing pounds), you have to look at what your goals are (eliminating processed foods? low sodium? high protein? vegan? watching GI? etc.) and eat accordingly.
Just about everything is okay in moderation. I make sushi at home sometimes (seaweed, sticky rice, avacado, cucumber, toasted sesame seeds, and wasabi), and I consider it part of a healthy meal.
To me, Subway sandwiches to me are okay in a time-crunch, but even their whole wheat bread is pretty void of fiber, plus I have to get it with oil (since I don't get the cheese) or it'll make me sick. They're also pretty high in sodium, so if you're eating other high sodium foods, like soy sauce or soda, you might get a little temporary bloating.
Do what works for you. If you really like it, then go for it, but if you notice that, at some point, you'd rather have something else, listen. Our tastes often change when we make an effort to eat more wholesome, nutritious foods.
I love sushi, although I usually go for sashimi or nigiri. Not really a big fan of rolls. Only couple I really like are spicy scallop and eel hand rolls. Nothing hits the spot then nigiri with good quality fish and a touch of wasabi between rice and fish, or a piece of quality sashimi.
As for subway. Well if you have a choice between fast food places then I would choose subway. Personally I like their clubs (no cheese, no mayo, and no olive oil). I order a foot long. As long as it fits in to your diet why not? They are high in sodium, but really it only matters if you have high blood pressure.
i consider both of those to be healthy options. i get the veggie sub on honey oat w/o cheese or mayo and with lots of spicy mustard. it's good for an out to eat kinda of thing obviously there are better things for you.
as for sushi i get cucumber, avocado and carrots rolls w/ lots of wasabi and some soy sauce. i can even find sushi w/ brown rice instead of white sometimes. i love sushi!!!!
i would definitely say these two should be fine. i think california rolls have lots of mayo in them though so you might want to choose a different roll like the veggie or a tuna.
