Is there such a thing as too much fruits?

Can too much fruits be fattening?

In order to lose weight, I have been eating quite a large amount of fruits. In fact, I substitute my dinner for fruits. My daily meals are pretty standard. I eat a slice of wholegrain toast with peanut butter for breakfast, and a sandwich with a salad (and two apples) for lunch. As I do not do any strenuous activities during the day or at night (just yoga, I just eat fruits for dinner. The thing is, as I do not snack between meals (no time, and I am usually not hungry after a big lunch), I am hungry by the time it?s dinner, so I usually consume a lot of fruits. By a lot, I mean (approximately) two apples, two plums, some grapes, a nectarine, and a banana. I have heard that fruits have a lot of sugar and eating too much will make you fat. My friends tell me that eating fruits for dinner is actually worse than eating, say, a beef stew or a chicken casserole.

My question is this: Will eating too much fruits make you fat?

And if so, is the amount I?m eating considered ?too much??

As an afterthought, I'd like to ask if bananas are really that bad for weight loss? A lot of people have been slagging them because of their high sugar and fat content so I was wondering if it is actually all right to eat one or two per day.

Sorry for the loads of questions. These subjects have been bugging me for a long time. Thanks.

I personally think that is way too much fruit. I also think that you are not getting enough protien to keep your metabolism primed. Your breakfast isn't balanced either. No eggs? meat?? Oatmeal?  Are you actually trying to lose weight or what's the goal?

Fruit is pure sugar. That's not good in that your body will produce a lot of insulin to store it.
Too many calories will make you fat. Only eating a few things gives you an unbalanced nutrition plan. Remember the old food pyramid? You need a certain amount of complex carbs, some protein, etc.

Myself, I do the 5 fruits/veggies a day thing, eat Salmon twice a week, get my complex carbs, proteins, a multivitamin and a baby aspirin each day (doctors orders about the aspirin), and 24 ounces of fat free milk daily.

I have a banana and 1 tablespoon of wheat germ daily in my oatmeal - I have not heard a banana would be bad for you. If I remember correctly, bananas are a good source of potasium. I also have an orange with breakfast, instead of orange juice.

I would say, keep a journal of everything you eat. Calculate your caloric intake daily. If you find yourself gaining weight, substitute lower calorie items into your diet, your journal will make it clear what you can change.

Good luck!!!
I think Nubiker did a great job answering that.

Here is a link for a little fruit information for you http://chetday.com/benefitfruithealth.htm
jn89 - I, too, love fruit.  Sometimes I will only have watermelon or cantaloupe for dinner.  Yummy!  Especially in the hot summertime.  HOWEVER, to caution about too many fruits...too many of one thing means you aren't getting enough of another.  Moderation in all things is a good motto.

Although it is true that fruit is high in sugar, fruit is not just sugar.  It is also high in fiber and essential vitamins and antioxidants and all kinds of good stuff.  If I were you, however, I would substitue one of the apples and one of the plums with a protien like a few slices of turkey, cheese or a boiled egg, or if you are veggie, then edamames or peanuts or walnuts or a cold 3 bean salad etc.  You do need protien.  If you had more protien at your evening meal, you would feel more satisfied and you wouldn't need to eat so much fruit.  Protien is essential fuel for your body and muscles.  Try to get in some green things too, like green beans (very low cal) or ceasar salad.

Bananas are good for you as well.  They help in digestion and help with muscle cramps.

If you are worried about calories, cantaloupe and honeydew are about the lowest per ounce in calories & sugar.  You can eat a lot of cantaloupe for one apple or banana.

All that being said....GO FRUITIE!
In my opinon, I think that is way too much fruit and not enough protein, nutrients etc.  I'm not a doctor, but I don't think it's good for you.  I wouldn't be worried about fat gain at this point, I would be more worried about health risks.  Maybe you should talk to a nutritionist or someone who can stear you in a direction.  Found this link... hope it's helpful.

It doesn't sound like too much fruit to me. It does sound like you might be short protein but that's a different question.

Between fruits and veggies normally I do something like 900 to 1000 grams every day. It sounds like alot but it doesn't add up to too many calories.  Hey the stuff is mostly water -)
Hi, I don't think that's too much fruit - I eat loads of apples and tomatoes (they're in season over here in England) and I've always thought that pretty normal. Processed food is more of an issue to me. That said some people get acid indigestion from fruit so really it's about self awareness. If you feel well you probably are.

Of course I don't know if you're really overweight or maintaining and I think there is a difference. If you've got protein or fat stored then you have that to keep you going, if not I'd be a bit cautious about living on fruit. I know there is protein in nuts and bananas but if you are short you'll probably feel tired, so you could have a glass of milk or some fish maybe.

There only really serious issue I can think of with this is there's a lot of vitamins and minerals you can't get from fruit so you could probably use a vitamin supplement and maybe cod liver oil, just to top you up.
it's true that fruits contain lots of suagr, but some of those fruits have a much smaller effect on your blood sugar than others. I'd stick to berries, apples, pears, peaches and limit the bananas if you are worried about blood sugar. Bu that said, you may need more protein. For breakfast, why not try a portion of oatmeal with some strawberries and a half cup of nonfat yogurt? That way you get some fruit, some protein, and some low GL beneficial carbs. I don't think it pays to skimp on breakfast.  Poached eggs are great thing to have too, and you can even do them in the microwave. Too much of anything can be bad for you, so maybe try to make some substitutions occasionally. I like to use my fruits along with meat and greens...for instance, I like a green salad with chopped apple and grilled chicken for dinner...you get some fruit but combine it with protein and veggies, and the overall effect on your blood sugar is minimal.

Thank you so much for your advice. I did forget to mention that I am also taking Zink-ACE multivitamins daily. I agree that perhaps my diet is lacking in protein and I know I should add some eggs, fish and a bit of meat in my meals. My problem is, I am a student in an enclosed campus (meaning I do not have the liberty of going out to shop for my own food). My food is what the school serves, and most of it is oily, deep-fried and creamy. There are dishes with pure carbohydrates in them, and some with almost no vegetables. So I opt for sandwiches (I scrape off the butter and mayonnaise in them) and salads during the day, and I stick to fruits at night. I take your point that my breakfast is lacking, and I will try to increase my intake of protein in my all my meals.

I have another question regarding fruits. Are the calories we consume from fruits equivalent to the calories we get from other kinds of food products?

Again, thank you for your help in this. Losing weight sure is a killer.
Ya they are the same. Calories are calories. I eat lots of fruit during the day and protein (Anything that swims or flies)! LOL! I wished I could get myself to eat more vegies. It sounds like you might be over-loading on carbs so try to eat more good protein; not so much peanut butter because it's high in fat. Since I increased my protein to about 40-50% I lose weight faster. Good luck!
Fruits should be eaten in the morning when your body needs carbs. You don't need carbs before you go to sleep. Carbs are ENERGY and you don't need energy to sleep.
fruit also has tons of sugars. be careful.

(Anything that swims or flies)!

Do you eat Bats, Butterflies, wasps, eagles, mosquitoes etc? ;-)
hehe, witchy (and I feel so funny calling someone by that name in a nice way!), your post brings to mind all the little factoids like "you swallow 8 spiders in your lifetime." etc. And the nickelodeon-like craze for chocolate covered insects that happened after a food network crazy candies thing.

As for the fruit, I personally eat fruit for dinner fairly often. I like having light dinners, and a fruit salad (melon, pineapple, apples and peaches) or a smoothie (some combo of above+yogurt) were definitely regulars even at my tinier weights. I also tend to be a bit active in the evening, so the sugars went away, but just to say that depending on your tastes and lifestyle, it could be an okay thing in my book.

Try to squish some more protein in there. I like cheese for that one. For a nice, light alternative to fruits, the "caprese" salad is great. Some fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and basil, maybe a dash of salt and olive oil, and oh so good.
Actually all calories are not the same. Look, sure fruits are great for you and you are doing a great job for your body from a nutrition standpoint, but too much of anything is not going to be a good thing. An orange is very healthy, but you wouldn't eat 15 oranges thinking that would be better for you.

In fact you should continue to eat many fruit but just cut back a little. Fruits contain glucose which spikes you blood sugar and insulin production, I would suggest you eat more protein at dinner and eat as many veggies as you want. In fact if you want to drop the amount of sugar you consume in one day try replacing half the fruits you eat with veggies.

Oh, and bananas do have a lot of sugar so eat half of one at breackfast and one with lunch.

And remember moderation is key!...happy dieting :)

Thanks to everyone again. Whew, before this, I've never thought that eating lots and lots of fruits were unhealthy! I mean, I've been taught that fruits were good and eating lots of them was key so it really came as a shock that so many people thought otherwise.

Browsing the website, I realised that there are some junk foods (chocolates, candies, even fried foods) that contain LESS calories than mot fruits. It is extremely confusing (and more than a little annoying) that a processed breakfast bar / snack can be less fattening than a couple of apples. Health issues aside, are foods with less calories automatically less fattening than foods with more calories, regardless of their nature?

*BUMP!!!*

Since I too, would like an answer to the above question, although it was nearly 2 years ago!

-here's hoping

While some processed junk might have more cal. than 2 apples, it is not just about the calories.  Two apples are always going to be a healthier choice and better for your body than junk food.  Also, you get great stuff with fruit, like fiber and vitamins.  Avacados are high in fat, yet the good type of fat that is good for your body.  Also, for the people saying you are eating too much fruit, I disagree. The sugar in say bananas is a natural type of sugar, sugar your body needs, not like when you think of sugar in a candy bar.  While your diet might not be balanced (although you might have protein in your sandwich, I don't know), I think it is good to eat a lot of fruits and veggies.  I think if anything people load up on too much meat and cheese and are getting over the amount of protein they need.  I would say eat a light dinner and space the fruit out within your day as little snacks, your body will eventually get used to it:)
