Are sugar alcohols safe for diabetics?
Asked by lorainbrain on Oct 20, 2008 in Health Conditions

If the product label reads 0 sugar but 20 grams of sugar alcohol, aren't I actually getting some sugar?

Answer

Sugar alcohols are safe for diabetics. Sugar alcohols provide some carbohydrate, but because it is slowly or incompletely absorbed, it doesn’t impact blood sugar much. Sugar alcohols are included on the Nutrition Facts panel in the 'total carbohydrate' content of a food, but they provide only half the carbohydrate of sugar.  For instance,20 grams of carbohydrate from sugar alcohol provides 10 grams of usable carbohydrate. Do not eat too many sugar alcohols because they can have a laxative effect. Incompletely absorbed sugar alcohols are fermented by bacteria in the large intestine, which can produce gas, bloating, and diarrhea.

Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
