How much sugar a day when eating fruits????

Quote  |  Reply

I am aware that you are supposed to limit your daily added sugar intake to about 30g a day, but what about when you are eating only fruits and vegetables? I do not have any added sugar in my diet, such as that which comes from high fructose corn syrup in the form of say cola. I have a fully balanced diet, and usually take in about 50 - 80g of sugar a day just because I am eating so many fruits and vegetables. Is this too much?

If I am supposed to limit this number, then what am I supposed to eat???? If anybody has any suggestions I would appreciate them. Also, I am vegan, so this really limits my options then :)

I have already cut out the bad food from my diet, I eat about 30-35g of fiber a day, my saturated fat intake is ususally less than 5g, my sodium intake is usually around 1500 - 2000mg, and my carb:fat:protein ratio is usually around 60:20:20.

Thanks in advance for the help :)

50-80g of sugar if it's coming from fruit & veg is perfect.  Two or three portions of fruit a day is plenty and allows you to get a good variety of other foods.  (If you were eating six or eight portions of fruit to the exclusion of everything else, that wouldn't be too healthy)  Vegetables you can eat as many as you can physically accommodate.  Your diet sounds just fine.

thanks gi jane!  i was wondering the same thing because i eat like 3 servings of fruit a day and my sugar is always so high, according to CC.  all of my sugar comes from fruit and veggies, except for one bowl (2 servings) of cheerios in the morning.

I'd like to add a little to what gi_jane said.  There are many forms of sugar.  Sucrose (like from table sugar, colas, etc) is the sugar that you would probably want to limit.  Fructose (fruit sugar) is fine in large amounts.  It has to do with the sugar's chemical make-up and how hard it is to break down.  Also prolly with where it is stored.

So rock the fruits and veggies! Plus they are rich in vitamins.

THANKS FOR THE QUESTION AS I WAS WORRIED ABOUT THE FRUIT ALSO.   Laughing
