I started a diet with exercise, along with metformin (for PCOS) back at the end of March and lost close to ten pounds in 3 months. But then, a few weeks ago, I started to slip a little. Whereas, in the beginning I was doing well under or close to 1500 cals a day and my sugar cravings were far under control, lately I crave sugar all day again and am up around 16-1700 cals. I even gained 1 pound back. I also feel like I did before I even started (for the longest time I was feeling great. Now I feel tired and irritable a lot of the time). What's changed? I got horribly sick for two weeks and lost an early pregnancy.
I am scared I am going to gain back all the weight I lost. I still exercise as much as I can, including walking and yoga (I haven't been able to go in about 2-3 weeks though). I do acupuncture. I try to keep a normal sleep schedule and breathe...
Additionally, there are too many birthdays, work functions, family gatherings the last month, where food is not low cal and much too plentiful...
I just feel like I am going back to square one.
Anybody else ever feel like their diet just stops working after a while?
Any tips or words of encouragement?
Sugar makes you feel good. If you are sick, stressed and maybe a bit depressed, you probably want sugar because it gives you that happy feeling for a little while.
But I know what you mean about losing motivation; I tend to be really motivated for awhile and then it just goes away. Just try to keep on with eating properly and exercising when you can. Cut yourself a little slack. One pound is not the end of the world. One day, you'll wake up and find yourself super motivated again and you'll be back on track.
Thanks!
First, dont drink alcohol. I dont care what kind it is, if you are a sugaraholic you will crave sugar. Second, when you are craving sweets, you may actually be craving fat. Try eating small pieces of your favorite cheese. Third, try not to eat after 5pm- if you do- NO CARBS unless they are fiberous (ie broccoli, etc)
I have found a sweetner (all natural) called Agave nectar. It is fantastic. It has a very low glycemic index so your body absorbs it slowly. Since I love a glass of wine at night, (sabotage for my diet) I came up with a solution. I use lime juice (fresh squeezed or juiced) and ginger root juice (you can use a garlic press to squeeze the juice which is a workout on its own or juicer) about 1/4 cup to a gallon of spring water. Use Agave to sweeten.
I am 5' 10 and just weighed in at 180(lost 12 lbs in 3weeks). My ideal weight is 160lbs. I have a muscular build and a 1500 cal diet never worked for me. I am currently taking in between 1100 and 1200 per day. I have to be extremely anal about counting and weigh myself each morning to make sure I am not gaining. Are you sure that your calories going in are less than what you burn in a day?
Good Luck.
Hi Fuelqueen,
I actually don't drink alcohol, because of the whole trying to concieve thing, but it makes sense. I have cut down on cheese, because of my cholestorol, but will try it in small doses.
I take in between 1500-1700 and burn around 2300, according to the burn meter. I actually already took the pound back off and am back down to 143, but am still concerned for the future. I am totally looking into the Agave nexter stuff!
Thanks so much and good luck to you too! :-)

I was diagnosed with PCOS and lost thirty pounds by walking and eating healthy. I still had to undergo fertility treatments to conceive my first son, and my twin boy and girl. After that I got pregnant on my own (once with an identical set of twin girls who I lost prematurly at 24 weeks) and then again with my beautiful baby girl who is now almost 8 weeks. Needless to say, I gained ALOT of weight with my last pregnancy because I was terrified of losing her the whole time I was pregnant. I have alot of weight to lose because I too am concerned with diabetes and the risks of PCOS.
As far as having so many functions to go to that make it hard to eat healthy...usually for those kinds of things we are asked to bring something....well, bring a healthy main dish....that way you could eat healthy and everyone else wouldn't really even know that you were dieting. It would just be another option.
Good luck. When we were TTC I just had to tell myself to keep on keepin on.
