I was just wondering, is it a problem that I am eating a high amount of sugar a lot of the time (e.g. today 71.5g) even if it is naturally occuring? For example today I haven't had any sugary sweet items...all the sugar has come from the fruit I have eaten and however much of it is in other foods (milk, multigrain bread etc etc.) Are you only meant to restrict your refined sugar intake, or do I have to restrict how much natural sugar I get too?
Thanks :)
Natural sugars are usually left out of that equation. However, whilst it's not a terrible thing to eat too much fruit (or too much milk or bread etc), it can be if it's at the expense of other foods.
natural sugars won't hurt you, but make sure you're getting enough of everything else you need too, like grains, vegetables, dairy, meat, etc.
Yes natural sugars eaten in excess will hurt you!!. If you are a fruit lover I would suggest finding out the sugar content of all the fruits you consume most. You can do a google search and find out which fruits have high, medium, or low sugar contents. Too much sugar from anything produces lactic acid (BAD)and helps in the creation of candida (Yeast), which most of america is infested with anyway. Also dairy products produce large amounts of lactic acid as well. I would suggest keeping dairy product consumption to a minimum as well. I would suggest eating a good mix of fruit mostly berries high antioxidant levels(blueberries are one of the best), Vegetables (Spinach and Brocolli) lean meat, and grains such as oatmeal, whole grain breads. Stay away from complex carbohydrates, such as pasta, anything made w/white flower.
I tend to keep my fruit intake to 3/4 a day. I have been checking most of my logs and it seems I am usually under 95g a day.
Like one orange in the morning, one banana for lunch, and a few strawberries for an afternoon snack.
Personally, I don't think it's going to hurt you if you keep your total sugars under 100 grams a day. The 'recommended' 40 is pretty much unattainable for any normal diet because a glass of milk and a piece of fruit will put you right at your limit. What they really mean is less than 40 grams of ADDED sugar. Too much natural sugar is only bad if it comes at the expense of protein and fats and other nutrients that your body needs just as much...
Great thanks for the replies :) I think I am eating around the right amounts of other food groups...but I could probably do with a bit more protein so I might need to shuffle things round a bit :) Thanks!
