I've done some googling, but nothing I've found has really satisfied my questions. Hope you don't mind me asking :)

According to the daily grade (the grade itself I don't follow but the other information is interesting) I get about 1g of salt a day if that. My googling tells me we're supposed to have 6g max. I also know we need salt but not how much. I'm retaining a boatload of water at the minute, is it the salt? Should I be eating more or less? We cook all our main meals from scratch so if any ever gets added it's just a pinch, which is probably why it's only about a gram a day.

With sugar, it's anywhere between 28 and 73g... that to me doesn't sound good! But I can't work out how much it should be. I'm guessing some of it's so high because of the ice cream I've been able to fit into my calories.

We don't need any salt or sugar added to our diet really.  We can get all the salt and sugar we need from natural foods like fruit and vegetables.  Salt was only introduced as a preservative a few thousand years ago, I was hearing the other day, but before that human beings existed quite happily without it.  If you're not eating much salt and you're retaining water then you could try drinking more.  Dehydration is a big cause of water retention.

I've heard that 30g added sugar (i.e. over and above fruit) is a good benchmark daily maximum.  The occasional ice-cream, I'm sure is a nice treat in your healthy diet.

Yeah, that's why I never add any at the table. I've been drinking more this week as that was my next goal. About 2 litres a day. Perhaps it's hormones or something else.

That echoes things I've found. I guess the 70g days are the bad ones then (there's been more than one this week) :S Will definitely have to watch that.
